POMONA, Calif--- The Cal Poly Pomona Broncos (14-10, 8-7 CCAA) swept a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) doubleheader 11-2, 5-2 this afternoon from the visiting SF State Gators at Scolinos Field on the campus of Cal Poly Pomona this afternoon. SF State will look to split the series with the Broncos tomorrow afternoon as the two teams play the final game of the four-game series at noon at Scolinos Field.
The Broncos used back to back four-run innings to key their 11-2 game one victory over SF State. With one out in the bottom of the first inning, Robert Palmer walked and advanced to second on a single by Travis Taijeron. Palmer scored on a two-out single by Marcus Maikia. Then Richard McDowell drove in Taijeron to give the Broncos a 2-0 lead. Jordan Alcantar then was hit by ap pitch to load the bases. Stephen Gonzales then drove home Makia and McDowell with a single to left center to give the hosts a 4-0 lead.
Cal Poly Pomona added four more runs in its half of the second inning capped by a three-run home run to left field by Makia to take a 8-0 lead.
The Gators scored its first run in their half of the fifth inning on a two-out single by Nick Nyman (Susanville, California, Lassen College)that scored Drew Andersen (Gilroy, California, William Penn University). Tyler Overstreet (Fresno, California, Santa Barbara City College) drove in the Gators' other run in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly that scored Nick Bowerman (Oakley, California, Mount Mercy College), who reached base on a one-out double to left field.
The Broncos broke open the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with a three-run inning to increase their lead to 11-2.
Travis Kelly (1-0) picked up the win for the Broncos, pitching 7 innings of four-hit ball, giving up two runs while striking out two and walking three. Ryan DeJesus (Westlake Village, Westlake) (1-2) recorded the loss for SF State, pitching two innings, giving up 8 hits and 8 runs walking one.
Makia led the Broncos going 3-for-4 with 5 runs batted in and four runs scored and Taijeron had two hits and scored three runs. Bowerman led the Gators with two hits with his fifth double of the season.
In the night cap, Cal Poly Pomona scored all of its runs with a five-run third inning off Gator starter, Patrick Haugen (Cayucos, California, Cuesta College) (3-1). Michael Neff opened the inning with a lead-off single and advanced to second on a one-out single by Manny Navarro. Erik Riedel singled home Neff with the game's first run. Riedel then stole second to put runner on second and third. Tyson Edwards drove home both Navarro and Riedel with a single to right field to give the Broncos a 3-0 lead. Jenzen Torres' two-out double drove home Edwards and Makia then doubled home Torres to give the Broncos a 5-0 lead.
SF State (9-13, 3-8 CCAA) scored both of its runs in the sixth inning. Sean Proni (Valencia, California, College of Marin) reached on an error with one out and advanced to second on a single byBen Mielke (Arcata, California, Shasta College). Drew Andersen then singled to drive in Proni and Mielke scored on an error by the Broncos that put Andersen on second. With two outs, Ryan Williams (Woodland, California, Yuba College) was hit by a pitch but Krist came in to get the final Gator out on a line out to left field.
Krist shut down the Gators in top of the seventh to record his third save of the season and preserve the win for Geoff Broussard (3-1). Broussard pitched 5.2 innings, giving up three hits and two unearned runs while striking out six. Haugen took the loss for the Gators, pitching six innings, giving up 8 hits and five runs while striking out six.
Torres and Makia had two hits apiece to lead the way for the Broncos while three different Gators had a hit in Andersen, Mielke, and Kevin Dultz.
