Mielke's Two-Out Single Gives Gators 4-3 Series Opening Win over Cal State East Bay

SAN FRANCISCO--- SF State junior outfielder Ben Mielke (Arcata, California, Shasta College)had the game-winning RBI in the Gators' 4-3 victory over the visiting Cal State East Bay Pioneers this afternoon in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) game at SF State's Maloney Field. Mielke hit a single to right field in the bottom of the eighth to drive in Tyler Overstreet (Fresno, California, Santa Barbara City College)with what proved to be the game-winning run. He finished the game 2-for-4 with a RBI, run scored, and two stolen bases.
 
Stephen Gatehouse gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead on his lead-off home run off a 3-2 pitch from the Gators' Spencer Kreisberg (Tigard, Oregon, Los Medanos College) in the top of the first inning. The game remained 1-0 Cal State East Bay until the Gator third. Sean Proni (Valencia, California, College of Marin) drove in Nick Nyman (Susanville, California, Lassen College) with a two-out single to left center with the tying run after Nyman reached base on a two-out double to left center. 
 
The Pioneers took the lead in their half of the fourth. Devin Grigg opened the inning on a lead-off walk and advanced to second on a single by Nick McManus. Both runners advanced a base on a sacrifice by Levi Josewski. Grigg scored on a ground out by Charlie Sharrer. 
 
SF State (10-15, 4-9 CCA) tied the game in its half of the fifth inning. Ryan Williams (Woodland, California, Yuba College)opened the frame with a double down the right field line and advanced to third on a throwing error by the Pioneers. He scored on a ground out by Nick Bowerman (Oakley, California, Mount Mercy College) to tie the game at 3-3. 
 
Mielke gave the Gators a 3-2 lead in their half of the seventh scoring when Proni reached on an error. The junior centerfielder opened the inning with a lead-off single and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Nyman. Then Mielke scored the go-ahead run when Proni reached on an error. 
 
Cal State East Bay 6-17-1, 3-14 CCAA) tied the score at 3-3 in its half of the eighth inning. Ricky Gonzalez opened the inning with a single up the middle and later scored on Grigg's two-out double to left field. 
 
SF State came back though in its half of the eighth. With one out, Overstreet singled to right field and then stole second. Then with two outs and Overstreet on second, Mielke drove him in with the game-winning hit on a two-out single to right field. 
Patrick Haugen (Cayucos, California, Cuesta College) (4-1) then shut down the Pioneers in the top of the ninth. Aaron Brown walked to open the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Sharrer. Haugen then struck out the final two batters to preserve the win.

John Volk (0-6) took the loss for the Pioneers in relief of starter Matt McCormick who pitched 7 innings, giving up three runs (two earned) while striking out three and walking four. Gatehouse had two of the Pioneers three hits. 
 
Spencer Kreisberg started for the Gators, pitching 7 innings, giving up five hits and three runs while striking out six and walking one. Haugen pitched the final two innings, giving up one hit, walking one, and striking out four. He now has 56 strikeouts and 14 walks in 41.2 innings of work. 

The two teams will continue the four-game series tomorrow morning at 11am for a doubleheader in Hayward.  They will conclude the series at SF State's Maloney Field on Sunday at 12pm.
