Softball Splits Doubleheader with WWU

Ashley Jackson Improved to 7-4 with a Complete Game Victory Over WWU
SAN FRANCISCO--- SF State's softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with the visiting Western Washington Vikings (9-11) this afternoon at SF State's Softball Field. Junior pitcher Ashley Jackson (Vallejo, California, St. Patrick's-St. Vincent) pitched a one-hit complete game victory in the Gators' 4-1 game one win over the Vikings. In the night cap, the Gators lost 2-1 in nine innings despite Vanessa Truan (San Jose, California, Leland) giving up just three hits and one unearned run in 7 innings.
 
Kelsey Wood (San Jose, California, Lynbrook) drove in the game's first run in the Gators' 4-1 victory as she drove in Karolyn Gubbine (Richmond, California, Pinole Valley) with a sacrifice fly to left field. Gubbine led off the game with a single down the right field line. 
 
The Gators scored another run in the third when Kelsey Wood drove in Heather Jensen (Sacramento, California, Del Campo)with a two-out single up the middle to give SF State a 2-0 lead. They added two more runs in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead into the last three innings.
 
Ashley Jackson (7-4) had a no-hitter going into the last out, when Krista Bickar hit a solo home run to left field. Jackson then struck out the last batter to get the 4-1 complete game victory. She struck out 10 and walked two while giving up one hit and one run.
 
Erika Quint (3-6) recorded the loss for the Vikings, giving up seven hits and four runs (two earned) while striking out 8 and walking one. 
 
Gubbine and Cara Spence (Colfax, California, Colfax)each went 2-for-3 for the Gators and Kelsey Wood drove in two runs.
 
In the night cap, Danielle Mestas (Los Angeles, California, Venice )drove in the game's first run in the bottom of the third inning on a suicide squeeze that scored Kylie Herrada (Gilroy, California, Gilroy). Herrada lead off the inning with a bunt and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jensen and went to third on a single by Gubbine.

The game remained 1-0 Gators, until the Vikings' half of the seventh inning. With two outs, Michelle Wrigley was hit by a pitch and advanced to second when Melissa Becker reached on an error. Wrigley scored on a single through the left side by Rachelle Berry to tie the game at 1-1. 
 
Western Washington won the game in its half of the ninth inning. Wrigley singled with one out and advanced to second on a ground out by Becker and scored on a two-out single up the middle by Samantha Rutherford which gave the Vikings a 2-1 lead. Sarah McEnroe (4-3) then retired the Gators in order in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the win. She pitched 3.1 innings of relief, giving up no hits and no runs while striking out one and walking one. 
 
Marisa Ibarra (Hollister, California, San Benito ) (4-3) took the loss for the Gators in relief, pitching two innings, giving up three hits and one run while striking out two and walking one. Truan in the start struck out four batters and walked five in seven innings of work. 
 
SF State (12-13) will return to action this weekend when the Gators participate in the Tournament of Champions, presented by Mizuno, in Turlock. They will open with a 1:15pm game against Western Washington in their first game of the tournament at Pedretti Park in Turlock.
