SAN FRANCISCO – Pat Haugen (Cayucos, California, Cuesta College) struck out nine batters and Drew Andersen (Gilroy, Calif., William Penn Univ.) crushed a three-run homer as San Francisco State defeated Sonoma State, 4-0, in the second game of a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader on Saturday at Maloney Field. The Gators also emerged triumphant by a 7-2 margin in the opener, taking advantage of two errors while stealing five bases.
With the sweep, SF State moves to 19-22 on the season and 12-15 in league play, while the Seawolves fall to 17-22 overall and 10-17 in the CCAA.
The nightcap featured a pitchers' duel between Haugen and SSU starter Kendall Davis until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Gators plated four runs on five hits. Brian Bianchi (Los Altos, Calif., College of San Mateo) and Devon King (San Diego, Calif., CCSF) led off the frame with back-to-back doubles, while Ben Mielke (Arcata, Calif. Shasta College) reached on a fielder's choice bunt after Davis' throw to third base was late. Andersen then stepped the plate and launched a 1-0 pitch over the fence in right field to give the home team a 4-0 lead it would not relinquish.
The Seawolves stranded 10 runners in the contest, including three in the seventh, as Haugen (7-2) induced a groundout to preserve his second shutout of the 2010 campaign. Haugen, whose 93 strikeouts rank second on the school's single-season charts, gave up just five hits and three walks in the win, while Davis (1-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing all four runs on six hits and one walks in 4-plus innings of work.
SF State also received a solid pitching performance in game one from starter Ryan DeJesus (Westlake Village, Calif., Westlake HS), who notched a career-high seven strikeouts, while yielding just one run on four hits and two walks in seven innings to even his record at 2-2 on the year.
The contest was scoreless until the bottom of the third when Greg Kline (Las Vegas, Nev. San Joaquin Delta College) singled in Andersen and Kevin Dultz (Altadena, Calif., Glendale Community College) with game's first two runs. Earlier, Andersen reached safely when his grounder was muffed by shortstop Randy Wells, while Dultz was a hit by a pitch. The two runners then moved into scoring position on Nick Nyman's (Susanville, Calif., Lassen College) sacrifice bunt, which was followed by a walk to Ryan Williams (Woodland, Calif., Yuba College). Moments later, Williams, who moved to second on Kline's hit, came home on Bianchi's single to right, while Kline also scored on the play when outfielder Austin Hogans' throw to third went awry.
Leading 4-0, the Gators added two markers in the second as Nyman's RBI groundout plated Andersen, while Dultz touched home on a Williams single. Previously, Andersen got aboard on a base hit and promptly stole second. Dultz was then struck by a pitch for the second time in the game, which set the stage for a double steal attempt as both runners advanced successfully.
SF State then tacked on its final run in the bottom of the seventh when Kline singled in Williams for his third RBI of the contest.
SSU pushed across a single run in the fifth and added another in ninth inning on Joey Parigi's RBI single; however, the deficit proved too much to overcome. With two runners aboard, reliever Kyle Mastellar (Corning, Calif., Shasta College), who entered in the eighth, got out of the jam as a flyout and a strikeout ended the game.
Seawolves starter Scott Alexander took the loss after yielding six runs (three earned) on five hits and four walks in four innings of duty.
Kline and Bianchi each had two hits, while Dultz, Williams and Andersen scored two runs apiece.
