SAN FRANCISCO--- The No. 2 ranked UC San Diego Tritons took the series opener 19-3 from the SF State Gators this afternoon at SF State's Maloney Field. The series will continue tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader at Maloney Field beginning with game one at noon. The four-game conference series will conclude this Sunday with a single game also at SF State beginning at noon.
The Tritons (42-6, 32-5 CCAA) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Vince Albitz started the game with a lead-off double to left field and advanced to third on a sacrifice by Kyle Saul. He scored when Aaron Bauman stole second after reaching on a walk and advanced to third on an errant throw. Bauman then scored on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Gregorich. They added a single run in the second to make it 3-0 Tritons.
SF State cut into the Triton lead with a single run in the bottom of the second.
Greg Kline (Las Vegas, Nevada, San Joaquin Delta College)reached on a two-base error and scored on a two-out double by
Sean Proni (Valencia, California, College of Marin).
The conference leader, UC San Diego, then added three more runs in the third with Danny Susdorf one-out two-run single to center field capping the inning which was started by a lead-off home run by Saul.
The Gators (22-29, 15-22 CCAA) added another run in the third inning when
Ben Mielke (Arcata, California, Shasta College) scored on a ground out RBI by
Nick Nyman (Susanville, California, Lassen College). Mielke started the Gator third reaching on a double down the left field line to make it 6-2 UC San Diego.
The Tritons added three more runs in the fifth with two coming on a one-out two-run double to center field by Kellen Lee. SF State scored its third run in the game on a RBI single by
Drew Andersen (Gilroy, California, William Penn University)that drove in Mielke.
UC San Diego added two more runs in the sixth, four in the seventh, one in the eighth, and three in the ninth to make the final 19-3 Tritons.
Tim Shibuya (10-2) picked up the win for the Tritons, giving up 7 hits in six innings of work while striking out three and walking one. He also gave up three runs (one earned) en route to his 10th victory of the season. Susdorf went 4-fo5 with three RBIs while Kellen Lee was 4-for-4 with 5 RBIs.
