LOS ANGELES – Luisa Musika (Milpitas, Calif., Milpitas HS) set a new school record in the discus throw on Friday to pace select San Francisco State track and field athletes on day two of the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational at Drake Stadium on the campus of UCLA.
Musika finished second in the open section of the event with a career-best distance of 149 feet, 10 inches, surpassing former Gator Cammie Carrol's 2004 standard of 149-04, while eclipsing her previous personal best by seven inches set at SF State's Johnny Mathis Invitational on April 3. With her effort, the Gator sophomore improved upon her NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark, which is also tops in the California Collegiate Athletic Association so far this season.
Meanwhile, Tyler Dalbey (Petaluma, Calif., Santa Rosa JC) recorded an NCAA DII provisional qualifying mark of her own on Friday, placing third in the open section of the 400-meter hurdles with a career-fast clocking of 1 minute, 2.25 seconds, which ranks second on the Gators' all-time outdoor performance list and represents the school's fastest time in the event since 1986.
“I am very proud of what Tyler has been able to accomplish here at San Francisco State,” said Gator head coach Terry Burke. “She leads by example and is a good role model for our other student-athletes with her hard work and perseverance.
Elsewhere, Brittany Johnson (Marina, Calif., Monte Vista Christian HS) just missed out on a top 10 showing in the open finals of the 100 meters, finishing 11th with a time of 12.94 seconds, while Stefeny Butler (San Jose, Calif., Mt. Pleasant HS)notched a season-best 59.88 clocking in the open section of the 400 meters.
“Overall, I was very pleased with our results today,” Burke said. “Luisa and Tyler are our team captains and they certainly rose to the occasion against a lot of Division I competition. The conditions were fairly decent, and I think we are in good shape as we gear up for the conference meet in a few weeks.”
On Saturday, the Gators wrapped up competition at the RJ/JJK Invite as the quartet of Johnson, Eggert, Carrie Thomas (Milpitas, Calif., Milpitas HS) and Butler finished with a time of 49.00 in the 4x100 relay, while the team of Eggert, Butler, Dalbey and Thomas clocked in at 3:54.32 in the 4x400 relay.
SF State will return to Southern California next weekend when it competes in the Soka Invitational on Saturday April 17, in Aliso Niguel.
