SAN FRANCISCO--- Chico State scored two unanswered goals in the first half to key its 2-1 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) victory over the SF State Gators this afternoon at Cox Stadium on the campus of SF State. With the win, the Wildcats improve to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the CCAA while SF State falls to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the CCAA.
“You cannot come up and expect to play just 15 minutes and win the game,” said SF State Head Coach Joe Hunter. “We have to look at the situation right now and we are not making good decisions as a team,” added Hunter. “Starting this week, we have to make a decision are we going to pull for each other and get things going in the right direction, there are still a lot of games left in this season.”
The visitors took a 1-0 lead in the 6th minute as the Gators put the ball into their own net to give Chico State the early lead. The Wildcats dominated the first half as they out-shot SF State 11-1 including recording three shots on goal to the Gators none. Chico State doubled its lead to 2-0 in the 36th minute as Chris Akwaja connected on a ball from Josh Borja for his second goal of the season.
Chico State continued on dominating the game in the second half as the Gators first real shot attempt came in the 67th minute as
Edgar Villagrana (Pittsburg, California, Pittsburg) shot was blocked. Eight minutes later, Villagrana cut the Wildcat lead to just one as he connected on a breakaway after a pass from
Sasha Chalak (Concord, California, Acalanes) to put the Gators right back into the game.
The Gators had one more chance, when
Antonio Ugarte (Danville, Calforna, San Ramon Valley )corner kick did not connect with 8 minutes left in the game as Chico State held on for a 2-1 victory.
Eric Scolman in his first start of the season in goal for SF State had four saves while Sam Evans was in net for the Wildcats. Chico State ended up out-shooting the Gators 16-4.
