SAN FRANCISCO – With six seconds left in the first overtime period, SF State's
Antonio Ugarte (Danville, Calforna, San Ramon Valley )connected on a breakaway after a pass from
Malcolm Linton (Pasadena, California, LaSalle HS) to give the Gators a 2-1 overtime period over the visiting Holy Names University Hawks. Ugarte also played a part in the Gators' first goal in the 37th minute as he assisted on
Edgar Villagrana (Pittsburg, California, Pittsburg)goal to tie the game at 1-1.
“A win is a win,” said SF State Head Coach Joe Hunter. “I am happy with the guys as the kept battling to the end, but we had way too many mistakes today which we cannot afford to do this weekend,” added Hunter. “Give Holy Names credit as they are a good organized team,” noted the Gator head coach. “We looked passed them and thought we could give just 70%, but in this game you cannot do that no matter who the opponent is.”
Juan Martin gave the Hawks (0-2-1) an early 1-0 lead when he connected on a shot from the left side of the goal and kicked into the upper right corner off a cross from Oscar Ruiz in the sixth minute of the first half.
The game remained 1-0 Holy Names until the 37th minute when Villagrana connected on a shot in front of the net off a pass from Ugarte to tie the game at 1-1, which was the score heading into the half. This was Villagrana's first goal of the season.
SF State had a chance to take the lead in the first 11 minutes of the second half, but Lars Johansen stopped
Sasha Chalak (Concord, California, Acalanes) shot.
Adam Nowak (San Ramon, California, University of San Francisco)had also had a chance to break the tie a minute later, but his shot went wide as did Chalak's attempt two minutes later. The Gators last real chance came when
Josh Kuluris' header hit the post. Holy Names' only chance came in the 81st minute, but
Mike McNeill (Oakdale, California, Cal State Stanislaus)stopped Henry Goh's attempt to send the game into the extra period.
That is when Ugarte's heroics came into play with six seconds to go on a breakaway off a pass from Linton for the game-winner, which was his second goal of the season.
The Gators (2-0) outshot Holy Names 22-7 including 9-3 in the second half and overtime periods. McNeill had two saves in goal for SF State while Johansen had 7 in goal for the visitors.
