ROHNERT PARK, Calif.--- In a defensive struggle, it was the host Sonoma State Seawolves holding on to defeat the visiting SF State Gators 46-37 to improve to 5-8 overall and 3-6 in the CCAA. Lauren Varney (Oak Park, California, Oak Park HS)paced the Gators with 13 points on 5 of 7 shooting from the field. Aly Henington led the way for Sonoma State with 11 points.
"Although we lost we did a ton of positives throughout the second half of the game," said SF State Head Coach Joaquin Wallace. "Hopefully, we couse this as momentum for Humboldt State on Saturday."
The Gators scored the first six points of the game on two lay-ups by Michaela Booker (Union City,California, James Logan High School)and a jumper by Varney. Sonoma State took its first lead of the game, five minutes later as the Seawolves went on a 7-0 run to take a 7-6 lead on a Henington jumper. They increased their lead to double digits (16-6) with 8:30 to go in teh half on another jumper by Henington.
Sonoma State took a 24-13 lead into the half on a jumper by Jaclyn Bisordi.
The hosts continued their run as they outscored SF State 16-8 in the first 11 minutes of the second stanza to take its largest lead of hte game, 40-21.
SF State (1-12, 1-8 CCAA) would not give up as they went on a 16-4 run of its own to cut the Seawolf lead to just 5 (42-37) wtih just 1:19 left in the game.
Taylor Vigil's lay-up and two free throws by Heninington sealed the win for the Seawolves.
The Gators held the Seawolves to just 35% shooting from the field and forced 21 turnovers, but Sonoma State held SF State to just 22% shooting.
SF State will continue its four-game road trip this Saturday in Arcata for a 5:30pm showdown with Humboldt State. The Lumberjacks lost 72-64 to CSU Monterey Bay this evening.
