Box Score Hayward, Calif.-- Cal State East Bay recorded it second shutout of the season as the Pioneers defeated the visiting SF State Gators, 2-0 this evening at Pioneer Field. With the loss, SF State falls to 4-5-2 overall and 3-5-1 in the CCAA.
“You cannot just step onto the pitch and think you are going to win the match,” said SF State Head Coach Joe Hunter. “Cal State East Bay outplayed us this evening and deserved the victory.”
The Pioneers (2-9, 1-8 CCAA) came out on the attack from the start as Andres Ponce's shot went high in the fourth minute after an offside call on the Gators. Then 90 seconds later, Javier Martin connected on a cross from Tyler Anderen and headed the ball into the goal to give Cal State East Bay an early 1-0 lead.
The Gators came right back as
Sasha Chalak's shot was blocked in the 14
th minute and then one minute later,
Antonio Ugarte's shot was stopped by the Pioneer's Bryce Bookhamer.
SF State had one more chance to before the end of the half to tie the game at one apiece, but Bookhamer stopped
Jorge Valadas' shot in the 40
th minute .
The Gators came out strong early in the second half, but
Juan Sanchez's shot on goal was stopped by the Pioneer's Patrick Gilbertson in the 53
rd minute. Four minutes later,
Andrew Chansky's header went wide off of
Edgar Villagrana's corner kick.
Cal State East Bay sealed the win when Tyler Webster connected on a ball from Andres Ponce with four minutes left to give the hosts the 2-0 win.
SF State will look to get back on the winning track this Sunday at 11:30am, when the Gators travel to Pomona, Calif., for a conference match with Cal Poly Pomona. The Broncos defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 4-2 earlier this afternoon at home. The Gaotrs lost 1-0 to Cal Poly Pomona earlier this season at home.
