Broncos Rally Back To Defeat Gators, 3-2

L. Fidel Medina Assisted and Scored A Goal in the Gators' 3-2 Loss at CPP
Box Score POMONA, Calif.---    Cal Poly Pomona Broncos rallied back from a 2-1 deficit to defeat the visiting SF State Gators, 3-2 this afternoon in a conference match at Kellogg Field in Pomona.  Luis Gonzalez scored the tying goal in the 54th minute and then what proved to be the game-winner in the 71st minute to give the Broncos the victory.
 
“It was a better effort this afternoon as we came back from an early 1-0 deficit to take a 2-1 lead going into the second half, but could not hold on,” said SF State Head Coach Joe Hunter.  “Cal Poly Pomona is a very good team and it showed this afternoon.”
 
Jonathan Enns gave the Broncos an early 1-0 lead as he connected on a cross from Luis Gonzalez and headed it into the far post in the third minute. 
 
The Gators came right back and went on attack as Jose Vitela's shot on goal attempt was stopped by Cal Poly Pomona's Kris Minto in the 12th minute.  SF State had three more attempts stopped, blocked or go wide until the 34th minute when Edgar Villagrana scored the tying goal off a corner kick from L. Fidel Medina.
 
Two minutes later, Medina gave the Gators a 2-1 lead as he scored off a throw in by Malcolm Linton.
 
Cal Poly Pomona's Juan Mejia went to tie the game for the Broncos, but Eric Scolman recorded one his three saves on the day to send the Gators into the half with a 2-1 lead. 

The Broncos (8-3-1, 7-2-1 CCAA) came out firing in the second half as in the first minute Luis Gonzalez attempt to tie the game went wide left.  Gonzalez tied the game in the 54th minute off a throw in and connected on the header.
 
SF State's Saman Assadi went to break the tie, but the Broncos' Kris Minton stopped his shot in the 59th minute. 
 
The game remained tie until the 71st minute, when Gonzalez scored his 11th goal of the season has he connected on a cross from Justin Smith to give the hosts a 3-2 lead.
 
The Gators (4-6-2, 3-6-1 CCAA) had a chance to tie the game in the 83rd minute, but Kevin Johnson's header sailed high as the Broncos held on for the 3-2 win.
 
SF State did outshoot the Broncos 17-15 including 10-5 in the second half and had the corner kick advantage, 7-5.
 
The Gators will return home for the final time of the 2011 regular season this coming weekend for a pair CCAA matches.

On Friday, October 14 at 12:30pm, SF State will host Chico State and then a week from today at 11:30am, the Gators will host Cal State Stanislaus.  Prior to the match on Sunday, SF State will recognize both team's seniors including the Gators' five in Saman Assadi, Andrew Chansky, Thomas Comer, Malcolm Linton and Antonio Ugarte.
