Box Score 2 SAN FRANCISCO--- The visiting Western Washington University Vikings outscored the SF State Gators 13-2 in the first four minutes of the second half to key their 64-50 non-conference victory in game two of the CCAA/GNAC Shootout at the Swamp on the campus of SF State.
“Tonight for our first game against a quality team, we played well outside of the first four minutes of the second half,” said SF State Head Coach Dr. Joaquin Wallace. “Tomorrow is a new opportunity against a quality opponent.”
The Gators (0-1) came out strong in the first half as they scored the first six points of the game in the first 75 seconds.
Farrah Shokoor's lay-up gave the Gators a 10-2 at the 16:41 mark of the first half.
Erin Feeney's three cut the Gator lead to 12-11 with 10 minutes to go in the half, but the hosts increased their lead back to six (19-13) on a three by
Angela Van Sickel with 6:48 left in the half.
Candyce Matthews' two free throws with 3:20 on the clock gave the Gators a 23-17 lead, but the Vikings ended the half outscoring SF State 10-4 as they game was tied 27-27 as both teams headed into the locker room.
Western Washington (1-0) continued its run as Corinn Waltrip's lay-up capped a 13-2 run by the visitors as they built a 40-29 lead.
SF State cut the Viking lead to 47-42 on two made free throws by Matthews with a little under 11 minutes to go in regulation, but Western Washington went on another run (this time a 11-4 run) as the Vikings cruised to a 64-50 season opening victory over the Gators.
Matthews paced the Gators with 14 points off the bench, going 5 of 11 from the field including 4 of 4 from the charity stripe. In her first collegiate game,
Farrah Shokoor scored 10 points while dishing out four assists and recording three steals.
Nicole Hicks also chipped in 10 points and had four of the Gators' 12 steals.
Corin Waltrip had 17 points to lead the Vikings while Kristin Schramm chipped in 11 points.
The Vikings will now face UC San Diego tomorrow at 1pm in Day Two of the CCAA/GNAC Shootout at Pioneer Gymnasium on the campus of Cal State East Bay in Hayward, Calif. SF State will face Seattle Pacific tomorrow at 3pm in the final game of the shootout.
In the first game of the day, the 13
th ranked UC San Diego Tritons defeated Seattle Pacific 68-47 behind the duo of Lauren Freidenberg and Chelsea Carlisle who combined for 36 points, 17 rebounds and four steals. The Tritons held the Falcons to just 41% shooting from the field while forcing 26 turnovers. Aubree Callen led Seattle Pacific with 17 points and Katie Benson chipped in 14 points.
