Box Score 2 HAYWARD, Calif.--- In the final game of the 2011 CCAA/GNAC Shootout, it was the visiting Seattle Pacific Falcons defeated the SF State Gators 56-37 behind Rachel Murray's 16 points. The Gators lost despite holding Seattle Pacific (1-1) to just 35% shooting from the field including 33% from three-point land.
“Defensively, we are way ahead of schedule on where we want to be,” said Gator head coach Dr. Joaquin Wallace. “Offensively, we have to be able to put two halves together, which will happen.”
Seattle Pacific built a 10-4 lead in the first seven minutes of the game, when Joani Reimer connected on an old-fashioned three-point play.
The Gators cut the Falcon lead to 15-13 in the next eight minutes as
Lauren Varney capped a SF State 9-3 run. Seattle Pacific increased its lead back to 7 ( 20-13) when Erin Stephens connected on 1-of-2 free throws with 4:52 to go in the half.
SF State would not go away as the Gators outscored the Falcons 5-2 to cut their deficit to 22-18 going into the locker room at the half.
Seattle Pacific built its lead to double digits as the Falcons opened the second stanza on a 16-4 run to take a 34-22 on All-Tournament selection, Katie Benson, lay-up.
The Gators (0-2) cut the Falcon lead to 36-29 on a lay-up by
Farrah Shokoor with 11 minutes to go in the game, but Seattle Pacific built its lead to 50-30 (the Falcons' largest of the game) with four minutes to go and never looked back as they cruised to a 56-37 victory.
Lauren Varney finished with 10 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field while grabbing 9 rebounds to lead the Gators.
Rachel Murray, who also was named to the All-Tournament Team, scored a game high 16 points to lead the Falcons while Benson added 13 points.
The Gators will return to the court on Wednesday, November 23 at 3pm, when they host Cal Poly Pomona in their CCAA opener.
UC SAN DIEGO-WESTERN WASHINGTON
In the first game of the day, the 13
th ranked UC San Diego Tritons defeated the Western Washington Victory 79-60 behind a balanced scoring attack. Tournament Most Valuable Player, Chelsea Carlisle, paced the Tritons with 27 points. Emily Osga, who also was named to the All-Tournament Team, added 22 points while Daisy Feder and Lauren Freidenberg chipped in 10 points each for UC San Diego (2-0).
Western Washington (1-0) was led by Katie Colard's 14 points off the bench while All-Tournament selection, Corinn Waltrip, had 9 points while dishing out 6 assists for the Vikings.
