SAN FRANCISCO --- In both team's California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener of the 2011-12 regular season, it was the visiting Cal Poly Pomona Broncos defeating the SF State Gators 73-59 at the Swamp on the campus of SF State.
“I am pleased with the way our younger players played this evening,” said SF State Head Coach Paul Trevor. “Robbie Herndon, David Love and Andre Jones played with pride and passion which is what our program is built on.”
The Broncos (2-0, 1-0 CCAA) held the Gators to 39% shooting while they shot 46% from the field themselves to key their 73-59 road conference victory. DeRonn Scott had a game high 19 points off the bench to lead the way for Cal Poly Pomona while Dwayne Fells chipped in 12 of the bench for the visitors.
Cal Poly Pomona jumped out to a 14-5 lead in the first eight minutes of the game. The Broncos increased their lead to 36-18 (their largest of the first half) with 3:16 to go in the half on a three by Scott.
Daniel Trammel's three cut the Broncos' lead to 42-27 going into the locker room.
The Broncos came out strong in the second half and built their lead to 21 (55-33) in the first six minutes of the second half, but SF State would not go away.
Robbie Herndon's jumper with 7:24 to go capped an 18-5 run by the Gators and cut the Broncos' lead to 60-51.
Cal Poly Pomona came right back and increased its lead back to double digits as they went on a 6-2 run to take a 66-53 with just 5:13 left in regulation as the Broncos hung on for the victory (74-59).
SF State (1-4, 0-1 CCAA) was paced by Nefi Perdomo's 12 points while David Love added 9 points for the Gators.
The Gators will return to the court this Sunday, Nov. 27 at 4pm, when they take on NCAA Division I Saint Mary's College in the First Round of the Shamrock Office Solutions Classic in Moraga, Calif.
