No. 13 'Lopes Shoot Past SF State

PHOENIX---     The No. 13 Grand Canyon Antelopes improved to 3-0 on the young season as they defeated the visiting SF State Gators, 68-43, in the First Round of the Grand Canyon Thanksgiving Classic this evening at GCU Arena in Phoenix.  The Antelopes shot 47% from the field including 67% from three-point land to key their West Region victory over SF State.  Three Gators scored 9 points apiece to lead them in scoring in Michaela Booker, Nicole Hicks and Lauren Varney while Maylinn Smith scored a game high 17 points to lead four GCU players in double digits.
 
"Grand Canyon is a solid basketball team," said SF State Head Coach Dr. Joaquin Wallace.  "We have to do a better job of competing for 40 minutes."  "We have excellent starts, but have not figured out how to answer team's aggression over the course of the game."

The first half saw the score tied five different times in the first 11 minutes including the last time on a Nicole Hicks' jumper that tied the game at 11-11.  SF State (0-4) then took the lead, 15-14, with 7:23 left in the half as Lauren Varney went 1-of-2 from the charity stripe.
 
The 13th ranked Antelopes (3-0) went on a 15-3 run to take a 30-17 capped by Maylinn Smith's two made free throws with just 32 seconds to go in the first stanza.  Michaela Booker drained a three on the Gators' last possession of the half as the visitors were down 30-20 going into the locker room.
 
Nicole Hicks' jumper at the 16:12 mark of the new stanza capped a 9-5 run by the Gators as they cut the 'Lopes lead to just 35-29. 
 
Smith hit a three on the 'Lopes next possession to give Grand Canyon a 38-29 lead.  They then on a 6-0 run to take a 44-29 lead on Chigozie Ekweosor's jumper with 13:01 left in regulation.
 
The Gators would not go away as they cut the lead back to 9 (44-35) as SF State went on a 6-0 run of its own capped by a Booker jumper, but Grand Canyon outscored its visitors 22-5 in the next 11 minutes to take a 66-40 lead (its largest of the game) with just 58 seconds left on the clock.  The 'Lopes defeated the Gators 68-43.
 
Grand Canyon out-rebounded the Gators, 48-30 and held its opponents to just 24% shooting from the field.  SF State did force 25 turnovers by the 'Lopes while recording 14 steals including three each by Booker, Varney and Farrah Shokoor

The 'Lopes will face Cal State Dominguez Hills tomorrow night at 5pm MST in the final game of the Grand Canyon Thanksgiving Classic.  The Toros lost to Missouri Science & Technology 73-42 earlier today. 
 
SF State will finish off its week tomorrow afternoon playing its third game in four days as the Gators take on Missouri Science & Technology at 1pm (MST) in day two of the Grand Canyon Thanksgiving Classic in Phoenix.  The Gators will return home on Thursday, Dec. 1 at 5:30pm, when they host Chico State University at the Swamp on the campus of SF State.
