PHOENIX--- Despite holding the Missouri S&T Miners to just 37% shooting and forcing 22 turnovers, the SF State Gators lost 51-39 in Day Two of the Grand Canyon Thanksgiving Classic in Phoenix, Ariz., this afternoon at the GCU Arena.
Lauren Varney paced the Gators with a season high 11 points while dishing out three assists and blocking two shots.
Just like their game on Friday evening against No. 13 Grand Canyon, the Gators played an evenly matched first half. This afternoon's game saw five times in the first 20 minutes with the largest lead being a four-point margin held by the Miners (22-18), which was the score heading into the locker rooms at the half.
Missouri S&T (3-0) scored the first three points of the second half as the Miners took a 25-18 lead, but the Gators went on a 16-1 run to take a 34-26 lead with 12:19 on the clock.
The Miners tied the game at 34-34 when Courtney Kemp's lay-up capped a 8-0 run by Missouri S&T.
SF State (0-5) retook the lead as
Kaylaa Davis hit a jumper off an assist from Varney to take a 36-34 lead, but the Miners increased their lead to double digits as they outscored the Gators 12-0 in the next four minutes to take a 46-36 lead with just 3:11 to go in the game.
The Miners ended the game outscoring SF State, 5-3 to take the 51-39 victory.
Karli Sample led the Miners with 11 points while Hailee Parks added 10 points for Missouri S&T (who is a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference). They held the Gators to just 29% shooting from the field and out-rebounded SF State 39-31.
Candyce Matthews added 9 points off the bench for the Gators while
Nicole Hicks chipped in 8 points.
SF State will return home this Thursday, December 1 at 5:30pm, when the Gators host Chico State in a CCAA game at the Swamp.
