SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco State women's volleyball team ran into a buzz saw Friday, dropping a three-set decision to Cal State L.A. (25-14, 25-7, 25-22) in California Collegiate Athletic Association play at The Swamp.
The Golden Eagles (13-12, 10-10 CCAA) hit .392 for the contest, which lasted all of 64 minutes, knocking down 40 kills in 79 attempts with just nine errors, while the Gators (13-11, 9-10 CCAA) were plagued by 23 wayward swings of their own, finishing with just a .053 hitting percentage on 28 kills in 95 tries.
Individually, CSULA's Natalia Gonzalez (.440) led all players with 13 put-aways, Kymberly Silveyra contributed eight kills, 11 digs and three service aces, while Kaylynne Taeatafa dished out a match-high 31 assists.
On the flip side, SF State was paced by
Robyn Hall's seven kills, while
Halimah Oswald and
Megan Johnson added six apiece to go along with
Sarah Kurfess' match-best 12 digs.
In addition to their kill total, the Eagles also maintained at 34-28 advantage in digs and a 5-2 edge in total blocks.
SF State was unable to prevent substantial CSULA runs of 7-0 and 9-0 in the first two sets, respectively, which gave the visitors commanding leads in each frame.
Set number three was a much closer affair as the two teams combined for 10 ties, including an 18-18 deadlock after a kill by Hall. However, the Eagles closed with a 7-4 spurt as Gonzalez slammed two put-aways down the stretch, while Mary Laupepa added the final kill to complete the sweep.
The Gators will close out their 2011 home slate on Saturday when Cal State Dominguez Hills invades The Swamp, beginning at 7 p.m. Prior to the match, SF State will honor
Robyn Hall,
Sarah Kurfess,
Halimah Oswald,
Reyna Rochin and
