SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco State women's volleyball team sent its five seniors out in style Saturday night with a 3-0 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills (25-6, 25-18, 25-18) at The Swamp in the Gators' final home match of the 2011 season.
SF State held a special Senior Night ceremony prior to the contest, saluting the accomplishments of
Robyn Hall,
Sarah Kurfess,
Halimah Oswald,
Reyna Rochin and
Lauren Walsh.
With the victory, SF State raises its record to 14-11 on the season and 10-10 in the California Collegiate Association, securing its third-straight winning season for the first time since 1986-88. Meanwhile, the Toros (1-23, 0-20 CCAA) remain winless in conference play.
Two of the seniors, Hall and Oswald, tied for match-high honors with 13 kills apiece, committing just three combined errors on 34 total attempts for a blistering .535 attack percentage.
Megan Johnson (.444) also reached double digits in kills with 10 put-aways of her own, while
Iris Tolenada handed out a match-best 38 assists. Not to be outdone, Kurfess, another SF State senior, finished with 14 digs in her final trip out on the home court.
As a team, the Gators posted a .422 hitting percentage for the match (47-9-90), their best in conference play this year, while CSUDH swung at a .042 clip, totaling just 25 kills in 95 attempts with 21 errors. In addition, the Purple and Gold maintained a 41-32 advantage in digs and a 4-0 edge in total blocks.
SF State faced minimal resistance in the opening set as Johnson powered the way with four kills and two service aces.
The Toros kept things closer in the second stanza, pulling to within 12-11 following a kill by Azieanna Smith. However, the Gators successfully kept the visitors at bay with a 13-7 spurt to close out the set. Oswald blasted four kills during that stretch, while Hall added three to give the host school control of the match heading into intermission.
Set number three featured a tight battle in the early going, with SF State clinging to a 10-8 lead after an errant serve and attack. However, back-to-back put-aways by Oswald and Hall sparked a 10-5 run to give the Gators a comfortable 20-13 cushion they would not surrender. Shortly thereafter, Walsh added a pair of service aces, while
Kelly Ostello came off the bench to record a kill for the clinching point.
SF State closes out its 2011 slate next weekend, Nov. 11-12, when it travels to Sonoma State and Humboldt State on consecutive nights, starting at 7 p.m.
