SAN FRANCISCO --- In what proved to be the championship game of the CCAA/Pac West Shootout, it was the 17
th ranked Grand Canyon Antelopes holding off a late rally by SF State to defeat the Gators. Tournament Most Valuable Player, Jallisa Butler, led the way for Grand Canyon (6-1) with 11 points and 19 rebounds.
“We played a solid team, but just came up short in the end,” said SF State Head Coach Dr. Joaquin Wallace. “I am proud of the effort overall and I am hopeful that we can continue to grow from our preseason schedule.”
The Gators (2-7) forced 27 turnovers and held the Antelopes to just 34% shooting from the field while recording 11 steals. Hicks, who also was named to the All-Tournament Team, led the way for SF State with a season high 25 points to go along with her four steals. This was the second time that the Gators and Grand Canyon faced each other. The Antelopes won the first meeting 68-43 in Phoenix, Ariz., on Nov. 25.
The beginning of the first half saw Grand Canyon build a 10-4 leads in the first five minutes. Hicks capped an 8-2 run by the Gators with a lay-up seven minutes later to tie the game at 12-12.
The Antelopes outscored the Gators 13-9 in the final eight minutes of the half to take a 25-21 lead into the locker room.
Grand Canyon came out strong in the second half as they held the Gators scoreless in the first five minutes of the half and went on a 12-0 run to take a 37-21 (its largest of the game) lead.
SF State did not go away as the Gators cut the Antelope lead to just six (52-46) with 1:40 to go as the hosts went on a 25-15 run capped by a
Michaela Booker lay-up.
The Gators forced a turnover by the Antelopes on their next possession but could not capitalize as Maylin Smith (another All-Tournament selection) connected on both free throws to seal the 54-46 victory by Grand Canyon. Smith finished with 11 points and 7 rebounds for the Antelopes, who out-rebounded the Gators 52-33.
SF State will return to the court on December 29, when the Gators travel to La Jolla, Calif., for a 5:30pm scheduled game with the 5
th ranked UC San Diego Tritons.
In the first game of the afternoon, Cal State Stanislaus (3-4) defeated Notre Dame de Namur 71-69 behind all-tournament selection, Theresa Henderson's 19 points 11 rebound performance. The Argonauts (2-6) were led by their all-tournament selection, Trisha Malaspina, who had 24 points and 14 rebounds off the bench for NDNU.
