RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Despite earning five victories, the San Francisco State wrestling team came up short in a 19-15 defeat at the hands of Cal Baptist in a non-conference dual meet at Van Dyne Gym.
The Gators (2-1) drew first blood in the 197-pound weight class as
Andrew Reggi claimed a 14-7 decision over David Dill. The SF State sophomore recorded five takedowns during the bout to help raise his record to 11-3 on the season.
However, the Lancers (1-0) grabbed the next three matches, including a victory by technical fall at 125, to build an 11-3 lead on the team scoreboard.
At 141,
Daniel Flores made his second collegiate dual-meet start a memorable one with a 9-8 triumph over Bradford Gerl. The Gator redshirt freshman built a four-point lead with a reversal in the waning moments of the second period, withstanding an escape, a penalty point and riding time to up his record to 14-5 on the year.
The SF State momentum was short-lived, though, as CBU extended the margin to 19-6 on the strength of Dylan Cataline's win at 149 and Chris Santana's victory by technical fall in the 157-pound division.
The Gators captured the final three bouts by decision to narrow the gap, but still found themselves five points short of completing a dramatic comeback.
Isaiah Jimenez, ranked sixth in the latest NCAA Division II poll at 165, improved to 10-3 on the season with an 8-4 victory over Bronson Gerl, breaking open a tight 4-3 score with a second-period takedown to go along with a third-period escape and riding time.
At 174,
Arman Ostadsharif notched his fourth win of the year with a 10-6 defeat of C.J. Knowland. The SF State senior overcame a 5-1 deficit with three takedowns in the last two periods, adding a pair of penalty points and riding time to provide the final tally.
The Gators then closed out the evening with
Zach Jimenez's 5-3 triumph over Kyle Matthews at 184. The SF State junior broke a 1-1 deadlock with two third-period takedowns for his third victory of the season.
The Gators will break for final exams and the holidays before returning to action, Jan. 7-8, when they travel to Springfield, Ill., for the NWCA National Duals.
