Gators Defense Keys Win Over CSUS

NIcole Hicks Had A Season HIgh 21 Points and 5 Steals in the Gators' Win over CSUS
Box Score SAN FRANCISCO –SF State's women's basketball team picked up their first win of the season as the Gators defeated the visiting Cal State Stanislaus Warriors 72-62.  The Gators forced 21 turnovers this evening while recording 13 steals to key their victory.
 
“Tonight was a great effort against a quality Cal State Stanislaus team,” said SF State Head Coach Dr. Joaquin Wallace.  “We were able to close out the game and we had some great performances from Nicole Hicks, Lauren Varney and Angela Van Sickel.”
 
Hicks led the way for the Gators with a season high 21 points while Lauren Varney chipped in 15 points and Angela Van Sickel added 11 points. 
 
SF State (1-6, 1-2 CCAA) jumped out to an early 13-2 lead in the first six minutes of the game.  The Warriors cut the Gator lead to 22-16 on a three by Brianna Cotton with 7:16 to go, but SF State increased that lead back to double digits (32-22) with 2:56 left in the half. 
 
Nicole Hicks' jumper gave the Gators a 34-26 lead into the locker room.
 
The hosts opened up the second half outscoring the Warriors (2-3, 0-3 CCAA) 17-5 in the first seven minutes of the second stanza to take a 51-31 lead (their largest of the game.
 
Cal State Stanislaus cut the Gator lead to 63-53 with 4:41 to go on a Lauren Godde jumper, but that was the closest the Warriors would get as SF State held on for a 72-62 victory.

Theresa Henderson led the way for Cal State Stanislaus with 23 points and 11 rebounds.
 
SF State dished out 22 assists this evening while turning the ball over 14 times.  Farrah Shokoor put together a season high 7 assists while Van Sickel added 6.
 
The Gators (1-6, 1-2 CCAA) will continue their four-game home stand with as they host Notre Dame de Namur on Friday, Dec. 9 at 7pm in the First Round of the CCAA/Pac West Shootout at the Swamp.
