Hicks' Clutch Free Throws Keys Gators' 57-55 Win over NDNU

Angela Van Sickel Had a Career High 19 Points in the Gators' Win over NDNU
| Box Score 2 SAN FRANCISCO --- SF State junior guard Nicole Hicks hit two clutch free throws with five seconds left as the Gators held on to defeat the visiting Notre Dame de Namur Argonauts (2-4) 57-55 in the First Round of the CCAA/Pac West Shootout at the Swamp on SF State's campus. 
 
“Tonight was a great win versus a quality opponent,” said SF State Head Coach Dr. Joaquin Wallace.  “I am proud of our ability to execute offensively in the last three minutes of the game.”  “Angela (Van Sickel) played extremely well and Nicole (Hicks) was able to close the game in the end.”
 
Van Sickel finished with a career high 19 points as she went 8-of-16 from the field including connecting on three three-pointers while dishing out three assists to lead the way for SF State (2-6).
 
The Gator defense forced 16 turnovers by the Argonauts and held their visitors to just 38% shooting from the field.
 
Notre Dame de Namur had four players in double digits led by Taylor Dewees' 13 points.  Pilar Mullins chipped in 10 points and grabbed 13 rebounds while Emily Vore added 111 points and Trisha Malaspina had 10 points.
 
The Gators built a 17-8 lead (their largest of the game) at the 10:25 mark of the first half. 
 
Mullins' jumper with five minutes to go in the half capped a 9-0 run by the Argonauts as they tied the game at 17-17.  SF State finished the half outscoring its visitors 8-4 to take a 25-21 lead into the locker room.
 
The Gators continued the second half of where they left off as they started the second stanza outscoring Notre Dame de Namur 10-7 to take a 35-28 in the first five minutes of the half.
 
They increased their lead to 53-45 on Candyce Matthews' three with 4:57 to go, but the Argonauts would not go away.
 
Trisha Malaspina's lay-up with 10 seconds to go in regulation capped a 10-2 run by the Argonauts and tied the game at 55-55 all to set up the heroics for Hicks.
 
The junior guard was fouled by the Argonauts with five seconds to go and she calmly sank both free throws to give the Gators the 57-55 victory.
 
NDNU had a shout to tie the game, but their jumper fell short as the buzzer sounded.

SF State will face No. 17 Grand Canyon tomorrow at 4:30pm in the final game of the CCAA/Pac West Shootout at the Swamp.  In the first game of the day tomorrow at 2pm, Notre Dame de Namur will face Cal State Stanislaus.

In the first game of the tournament, Grand Canyon defeated Cal State Stanislaus 81-52 behind Maylinn Smith's 17 points and five assists.  Theresa Henderson led the way for the Warriors (2-4) with a game high 24 points.  The Antelopes (5-1) held Cal State Stanislaus to just 35% shooting from the field and forced 15 turnover while holding a 44-28 advantage on the boards.
