Gators' Defense Stymies Golden Eagles in 73-55 Win

Phoenix O'Rourke Became the Gators' All-Time Leader with 3 Steals This Evening in the Gators' Win To Give him 132 For His Career

LOS ANGELES---  SF State's defense held the Cal State LA Golden Eagles to just 26% shooting from the field and held the hosts to just 55 points in their 73-55 CCAA road victory at the Eagles Nest .  Marquel Hoskins (Beloit, Wisconsin, Reedley College)led the way for the Gators with 18 points and 9 rebounds.  Winston Demmin (Brooklyn, New York, Reedley College) chipped in 15 whilePhoenix O'Rourke (San Mateo, California, Junipero Serra)had three steals to become the Gators' all-time career leader with 132 steals.

'I am pleased with the way the guys played tonight,' said SF State Head Coach Paul Trevor.  "They trusted each other on both ends the court,' added Trevor.  'This week at practice we back to basics both offensively and defensively and it showed tonight.'

The Gators built a 11 point lead mid-way through the first half (22-11).  They increased their lead to 38-18 on a jumper by Hoskins going into the locker room at the half.  

SF State (14-7, 12-5 CCAA) increased its lead to 56-24 on a dunk by Winston Demmin in the first seven minutes of the second half. The Golden Eagles (12-9, 8-9 CCAA) cut the Gator lead to 14 (63-49) with three minutes to go but could not get any closer as the visitors cruised to a 73-55 victory.

The Gators out-rebounded Cal State LA 40-31 and forced 14 turnovers including 12 by steal (three by O'Rourke).  They also outscored their bench 29-14 led by Demmin's 15 and Chad Delaney's 6 points.  

"We had great balanced scoring tonight led by Marquel (Hoskins)," added the first-year head coach.  'Chad Delaney gave us great minutes off the bench this evening.'

SF State will continue its four-game road trip tomorrow evening at 7:30pm for a showdown with No. 15 Cal State Dominguez Hills.  The Toros won 67-65 over Cal State Monterey Bay this evening in Carson.
