ATHERTON, Calif.--- Nic Banaugh (Novato, California, College of Marin) (1-0) recorded his first win this season in the SF State Gators' 6-2 series finale victory over the Menlo College Oaks (5-3) this afternoon in Atherton. With the win, the Gators improve to 5-1 and took the three-game series from Menlo two games to one. SF State had 7 hits on the day with two coming off the bat off
Thomas Wood (Reno, Nevada, College of San Mateo), who was 3-for-5 with an RBI, stolen base and two runs scored.
"Nic (Banaugh) controlled the game and gave us a chance to win this afternoon," said SF State Head Coach
Mike Cummins. "We executed a little better this afternoon, but still have a way to go."
Banaugh pitched six innings, giving up two hits and two unearned runs while striking out 8 and walking no one.
Wood led of the game with a single and scored when
Drew Andersen (Gilroy, California, William Penn University) hit a double to give the Gators a 1-0 lead. Andersen then scored on a sacrifice fly by
Michael Sanchez (Citrus Heights, California, Sacramento City College). In the Gator fourth,
Jason Ochart (Glendale, California, Glendale Community College)hit a two-run home run with two outs to increase the visitors' lead to 4-0.
The Gators added an insurance run in the top of the fifth on Wood's first home run as a Gator.
Corey Metoyer put the Oaks on the board with a two-run home run in the fifth.
SF State scored its sixth run in the seventh, when Andersen's sacrifice fly scored
Ben Mielke (Arcata, California, Shasta College).
Andersen and Ochart each drove in two runs for the Gators.
Adam Koontz (1-1) recorded the loss for the Oaks.
The Gators will open up California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play this weekend in Los Angeles for a four-game series with the Golden Eagles of Cal State LA. The series will begin with a single-game this Friday, February 18th at 2pm.
