SAN FRANCISCO.--- The SF State Gators' baseball team won their regular season home opener 5-1 this afternoon over the visiting 15th ranked Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (1-1) at SF State's Maloney Field behind the pitching of
Steven Dea (Daly City, California, Skyline College) and
Matthew Cummins (Morgan Hill, California, San Jose City College). Dea picked up his first win as a Gator in the start, pitching 7 innings, giving up five hits and one run while striking out four. Cummins recorded his first save, pitching two scoreless innings of hit ball while striking out three.
“I was most impressed with that fact that we did not walk anyone and we had no errors this afternoon,” said SF State Head Coach

Alex Mehrten's runs scoring single with two outs in the Sunbird fourth gave the visitors an early 1-0 lead as he drove in Tyler Pryor, who reached on a double.
SF State (1-0) came back and tied in its half of the fourth on a two-out run scoring single by
Trevor Pasiecznik (San Mateo, California, College of San Mateo) that drove in
Ivan Otsuka (El Dorado Hills, California, Sacramento State) with the tying run.
Ben Mielke (Arcata, California, Shasta College)scored the go-ahead run when
Thomas Wood (Reno, Nevada, College of San Mateo) reached on an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the Sunbirds, which Mielke scored to give SF State a 2-1 lead.
SF State added a run in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead going into the last three innings. The hosts added two more insurance runs in their half of the eighth inning on a suicide squeeze by
Drew Andersen (Gilroy, California, William Penn University) which drove in Cummins and Wood drove in the final run on a two-out single to center field which drove in
Tyler Tulowitzki (Santa Clara, California, San Jose City College).
