SEASIDE—Cal State Monterey Bay won this weekend's series opener 3-2 over the visiting SF State Gators behind the pitching of Scott Tully, Jake Paolinetti, and Paul Brock and the timely hitting of Tommy George. Tully pitched 7 innings, giving up just five hits and two runs (one earned) while he struck out three en route to his second victory of the season. Paul Brock came on in to pitch a scoreless ninth as he recorded his second save of the season.
The Gators scored first as
Ivan Otsuka led off the game with a walk and advanced to second on his first stolen base of the season. He scored when
Michael Sanchez reached on an error with just one out. SF State stranded two runners on as Tully got the next Gator the final two outs on a double play with the bases loaded.
Cal State Monterey Bay (7-10, 4-5 CCAA) took lead with a two-run second inning. Jared DeCastro had a lead-off single and advanced to second on a one-out single by Alex Mangubat and scored on an infield single by Tommy George. Mangubat scored on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Young.
SF State tied the game in its half of the fourth inning on a one-out RBI single by
Andrew Suvunnachuen, who finished the day 2-for-4 with a RBI.
The Otters then took the lead back in the bottom of the inning on a two-out RBI single by George that drove in DeCastro.
The Gators (6-9, 1-8 CCAA) had a chance to tie the game in the top of the eighth inning. Otsuka walked to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice by
Dustin Wold.
Drew Andersen then walked with one out and
Kevin Dultz was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Jake Paolinetti go the next batter to ground into an inning ending double play.
DeCastro finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs scored while George also had two hits and two RBIs.
Besides Suvunnachuen's two hits,
Ian Fregosi had two hits also for the Gators.
Steven Dea (1-4) recorded the loss, pitching 7 innings while giving up 10 hits and three runs and striking out four.
The two teams will continue their weekend four-game series with a 11am starting doubleheader tomorrow morning at SF State's Maloney Field.
