SAN FRANCISCO--
Ashley Jackson struck out a combined 11 batters in 10.1 innings of work to key the Gators' split of this afternoon's doubleheader with the visiting Cal State Monterey Bay Otters. Jackson had 10 strikeouts in the Gators' game one 3-1 victory over the Otters. Cal State Monterey Bay came back to win the night cap, 5-1.
Angelina Orozco opened up game one with a lead-off single. She then scored two batters later on a two-out single by Shae Olds to give the Otters a 1-0 lead.
The game remained 1-0 Otters until the Gator half of the fourth inning.
Kendra Wood led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second when
Lea Cardenas reached on an error.
Jenna Robertson then hit a single to left field to load the bases for
Alyssa Esquibel, who then cleared the bases with a double to right center to give the Gators the 3-1 lead.
Jackson (4-9) then held Cal State Monterey Bay scoreless for the final three innings while giving up just one it. For the game, the senior pitcher struck out 10 and walked no one while giving up four hits and one run.
Kylie Linnane (3-4) recorded the loss for the Otters, giving up five hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out six and walking three in six innings.
Robertson finished game one 2-for-3 with a run scored while Esquibel had three RBIs.
In the night cap, the Otters (7-18, 5-12 CCAA) jumped out on a top in the third inning. Diane Ortiz singled to lead off the inning and was pinch run for by Rachelle Mahonney. Caydi Dommeyer then reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to third on two errors by the Gators. She scored on when Orozco reached on another Gator error.
Cal State Monterey Bay broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning capped by a two-run two-out double by Orozco to give the visitors a 5-0 lead.
SF State (6-17, 4-14 CCAA) got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning as
Kendra Wood hit a solo home run to right center, her first of the season.
Ortiz (3-10) picked up the win pitching 7 innings, giving up four hits and one run while striking out four and walking six. The Gators stranded 7 runners in the night cap. Ortiz had two hits and Dommeyer scored two runs while Orozco drove in three runs.
Marissa Ibarra (0-5) recorded the loss for SF State, pitching 3.2 innings, giving up five hits and five runs (one earned) while striking out one and walking one. Jackson pitched 3.1 innings of relief, giving up one hit and striking out one.
Rachael Kroneder had two of the Gators' four hits.
The two teams will conclude the four-game weekend conference series tomorrow with a noon starting doubleheader at SFSU's Softball Field.
