SAN MATEO--- The visiting Hillsdale College Chargers scored three runs in the third and four in the seventh to key their 8-3 non-conference victory over the SF State Gators at the College of San Mateo this morning. Hillsdale College mustered out 15 hits off of four Gator pitchers led by Brent Opland's 3-for-5 day.
Matt Quintero gave the Gators (8-13) a 1-0 lead when he scored the game's first run in the bottom of the second inning. He reached base on a one-out single through the left side. The junior catcher advanced to third on back to back singles by
Tyler Overstreet and
Will Klein. Quintero then scored as
Ben Mielke reached on a fielder's choice. SF State still had runners on first and second, but Michael Keve induced a ground out.
Hillsdale College took the lead in its half of the third inning as Scott Lantis had a lead-off single. He advanced to second on a one-out single by Adam Connell. Then the next batter, Jamie McNeill, hit a two-run double to left center to give the Chargers a 2-1 lead. McNeill scored on a two-out infield single by Chris Stephens.
The score remained 3-1 Hillsdale until the top of the seventh when the Chargers erupted for four runs on five hits capped by a one-out two-run single by Opland.
SF State cut into the Charger lead with a run in the seventh on a
Dustin Wold two-out run scoring double to center field that scored
Ivan Otsuka. The Gators added another run in the eighth on a solo home run to left center by Quintero to make it 7-2 Chargers (4-10).
The visitors added an insurance run in the ninth on a Stephens' solo home run to center field.
Michael Keve (1-2) picked up the win for the Chargers, pitching a complete game. He gave up 11 hits and three runs while striking out four and walking one. Besides Opland's three hits. Four other Chargers had multiple hits in Connell, McNeill, Stephens, and Lantis each with two hits apiece.
Jeff Clegg (1-1) recorded the loss for the Gators, pitching three innings, giving up five hits and three runs while striking out three and walking one.
Wold finished 3-for-5 with a RBI for the Gators while Quintero also had two hits and scored twice. Klein finished the game 2-for-4 for SF State, who will return to the diamond this weekend for a four-game series with No. 6 Chico State Wildcats. The four-game CCAA series will begin with single games this Friday, March 25 (3pm) and Saturday, March 26 (11am) at SF State. The series will end this Sunday, March 27 with an 11am starting doubleheader in Chico.
