LA JOLLA, Calif.--- Tim Shibuya struck out 11 SF State Gator batters while walking no one in the No. 3 UC San Diego's 7-1 victory over the visiting Gators. Shibuya pitched 8 innings, gave up just one run and six hits to improve to 5-0. Andrew Suvuunachuen had two of the Gators' six hits while scoring their only run.
The Tritons (13-4, 6-3 CCAA) used a four-run first inning to key their series opening victory over SF State. In that innings, Blake Tagmyer had a two-out two-run single to start the Tritons' four run inning. UC San Diego scored two more run in its half of the fourth inning to make it 6-0 Tritons.
SF State (5-6, 0-5 CCAA) scored its only run in the top of the sixth inning when Kevin Dultz drove in Suvunnachuen with a double. Suvunnachuen reached base on a lead-off single.
The Tritons added an insurance run in the seventh to make the final 7-1 UC San Diego.
Steven Dea (1-3) struck out 10 Tritons, but gave up 10 hits and seven runs (five earned) to take the loss for the visitors.
The two teams will return to the diamond tomorrow afternoon for a noon starting doubleheader.
