LA JOLLA, Calif--- After losing game one 10-2 at No. 3 UC San Diego. The visiting SF State Gators came back to win the night cap 5-3.
Matthew Cummins (1-0) picked up the win in the night cap, pitching three scoreless innings of relief. He also had two hits and drove in one run and scoring once.
SF State (6-7, 1-6 CCAA) scored three runs in its half of the second inning.
Nic Gauldin and Cummins opened the inning with back to back walks. Then
Michael Cala loaded the bases as he reached base on a bunt single.
Dustin Wold with the bases loaded as Gaulin scored the game's first run.
Ivan Otsuka reached on a fielder's choice which scored Cummins to make it 2-0 Gators. With two outs,
Drew Andersen hit a double down the line to drive in Cala with the inning's third run.
UC San Diego scored two runs in the bottom of the third to cut the Gator lead to 3-2. The Tritons tied the game in the fifth on a two-out RBI single by Blake Tagmyer.
Ivan Outsuka broke the tie with a two-out run scoring single that drove in Cala withe go-ahead run in the sixth. The Gators added an insurance run in the seventh to make it 5-3 SF State.
UC San Diego had the bases loaded with one out in the ninth, but Cummins got the Tritons to ground out to a game ending double play.
Cummins pitched three innings, giving up two hits and walking two.
Besides Cummins' two hits,
Drew Andersen and
Ivan Otsuka each had two hits with a RBI.
The No. 3 UC San Diego Tritons (14-5, 7-4 CCAA) used a five-run second inning to key their 10-2 win over the visiting SF State Gators in game one of this afternoon's doubleheader in La Jolla. Guido Knudson (3-1) picked up the win for the Tritons pitching seven innings of shutout ball while striking out seven and giving up just five hits.
In the Triton's five-run second, KC Rentro opened up the scoring with a two-run double and Kyle Saul followed that with a two-run single. UC San Diego added three more runs in the fifth and two more in the 7th.
Ivan Otsuka scored the Gators' first run in the top of the 8th on a two-out single by pinch-hitter
Devon King. The Gators added another run in the ninth as
Drew Andersen opened up the inning with a lead-off singled and scored on Otsuka's fielder's choice ground out.
Branden Petrangelo (2-2) suffered the loss for SF State while
Doug Stinson pitched two scoreless innings of relief, giving up no hits, and striking out two.
Nic Gauldin finished 3-for-4 for the Gators while Andersen was 2-for-2 with a run scored.
Evan Kehoe led the Tritons (14-4, 7-3 CCAA) led the Tritons' offensive attack going 4-for-4 with three runs scored.
The two teams will finish off the four-game series as the Gators will look to salvage a split in the four-game series.
