Gators Fall in Series Finale to No. 3 UCSD

Matthew Cummins Finished the Four-Game Series with UCSD Batting .571 Including Having Two Hits This Afternoon
LA JOLLA, Calif.---  The No. 3  UC San Diego Tritons (15-5, 8-4 CCAA) used a 10-run eighth inning to key their 13-3 conference victory over the visiting SF State Gators this afternoon in the weekend series finale at Triton Ballpark.  Aaron Bauman had the game-winning RBI in the 8th on a double that scored Danny Susdorf as he finished the day 3-for-4 with two RBIs.  Three Gators had two hits a piece to lead SF State's hitting attack in Kevin Dultz, Ben Mielke, and Matthew Cummins.

SF State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first ining as Dustin Wold scored when Dultz reached on an error by the Tritons.  Wold reached base with one out as he was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a stolen base and then went to third on an errant throw.

The Tritons came back and took the lead in the bottom half of the inning with a three-run inning.  Blake Tagmyer's two-run home run capped the inning for the Tritons.

The game remained UC San Diego 3-1 until the Gator half of the fourth.  Drew Andersen, Dultz, Nic Gauldin opened the inning with back to back to back singles.  Greg Selarz got the next Gator to ground into a double play to put Dultz and Gauldin on second and third with two outs.  Cummins came up and hit a two-run single to tie the game at 3-3.

The Tritons broke the game open with a 10-run eighth with KC Rentfro's two-run double capping the inning for the hosts.

Elias Tumas (2-0) picked up the win in relief for UC San Diego, going 3.1 innings of scoreless relief pitching, giving up two hits and striking out two.  Besides Bauman, Susdorf also had three hits and Tagmyer was 2-for-5 with three RBIs.

Dultz picked up the loss for SF State while Jason Ochart pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief, giving up three hits and striking out two.

The Gators (6-8, 1-7 CCAA) will return to the diamond for a four-game series with Cal State Monterey Bay this coming weekend beginning with a 3pm game in Seaside on Friday, March 11.  The two teams will then move the series to SF State for a 11am starting doubleheader on Saturday, March 12 at Maloney Field.  The series will end a week from today, also at 11am in Seaside for a single game.
