Dea Wins Pitchers' Dual In Gators' 1-0 Series Opener with CSUSB

Steven Dea Struck Out 5 Batters in the Gators' 1-0 Over CSUSB This Afternoon
SAN FRANCISCO – Junior pitcher Steven Dea pitched eight shutout out innings while giving up just three hits and striking out five in the SF State Gators' 1-0 win over the visiting CSU San Bernardino Coyotes (11-12, 8-7 CCAA) this afternoon in the first game of this weekend's four-game series at Maloney Field. Branden Petrangelo pitched a scoreless ninth to record his first save of the season and preserve the Gator victory.

“An outstanding performance by Steven Dea this afternoon,” said SF State head coach Mike Cummins. “He matched Aaron Brooks (who is a prospective top 5 round in this year's draft pick) pitch for pitch,” added Cummins. “Drew Andersen did a nice job leading off the eighth and Nic Gauldin did a great job of bringing in the game-winning run.”

The score was scoreless until the Gator eighth when Andersen led off with a single to center field. Chris Schindler pinch ran for him and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Tyler Tulowitzki. Then with no count 0-2, Gauldin hit a single to left center to score Schindler with what proved to be the game-winning run.

Petrangelo came in to relieve Dea in the ninth and induced the first two Coyotes' to fly out to right field and center field. Ethan Chapman than walked, but was caught stealing by the Gators' catcher, Kevin Dultz,on a throw to second baseman, Thomas Wood,  to end the game with a Gator 1-0 victory.

Dea (3-5) allowed no Coyote past first base and allowed just three hits to record the victory. He retired 18 straight Coyote batters until Erik Ornelas' second hit of the game in the top of the seventh, which Dea then picked him of at first.

Aaron Brooks (2-5) recorded the loss as he gave up just three hits and one run in eight innings of work while striking out 8 and walking one. Erik Ornelas had two of the Coyotes' three hits.
