Broncos Take Series Finale, 6-2

Kevin Dultz Had a Two-Out RBI Single This Afternoon in the Gators' 6-2 Loss to CPP
SAN FRANCISCO – The visiting Cal Poly Pomona Broncos took a 3-0 lead in the first two innings and never looked back as they defeated the SF State Gators 6-2 in this afternoon's series finale at SF State's Maloney Field. With the win, the Broncos (23-12, 16-12 CCAA) won the series 3-1.

The Broncos opened up the game with three straight singles by Mike Santora, Ryan Goodman, and Travis Taijeron off the Gator starter, Jason Ochart, in the top of the first inning. Taijeron's single drove in Santora with the game's first run. Still with no outs, Jordan hit a bunt single to drive in Goodman to increase the Bronco lead to 2-0.

The visitors added another run in the second on another RBI single by Taijeron. Stephen Gonzalez led off the inning with a single and advanced to second when Goodman walked with two outs. Taijeron then drove in Gonzalez to give Cal Poly Pomona a 3-0 lead.

SF State (12-23, 7-21 CCAA) scored its first run in its half of the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Will Klein that drove in Chris Schindler. Schindler opened the inning with a lead-off double and advanced to third on a single by Devon King. Klein then drove in Schindler with a one-out sacrifice fly to center field.

The Broncos came back though with two runs of their own in the top of the sixth inning to take a 5-1 lead.
SF State added another run in the eighth when Matthew Cummins led off the inning with a pinch-hit single. He advanced to second when Ben Mielke walked. Cummins scored on a two-out single to right center by Kevin Dultz.

Cal Poly Pomona added an insurance run on a sacrifice fly by Gonzalez that scored Chris Miller after he reached on a lead-off single. Miller went to third on a double by Tyson Edwards.

The Broncos had 14 hits off of four Gator pitchers with four players each with two hits apiece in Santora, Goodman, Taijeron, and Whitman while Gonzalez was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

Ryan Dunn (4-0) picked up the win, pitching five innings, giving up two hits and one run while striking out 6 and walking one. Michael Parker and Geoff Broussard pitched the final four innings, giving up a combined three hits and one run while striking out four and walking two.

Ochart (2-1) recorded the loss for the Gators while five different SF State batters had one hit apiece in Cummins, Suvunnachuen, Dultz, Schindler, and King.

The Gators will return to the diamond this Tuesday afternoon at 2pm for a non-conference game with the University of Nevada in Reno. They will return home on Friday, April 15, when the Gators begin a four-game series with Sonoma State with a single game at 3pm.
