RENO, Nev.--- SF State's baseball team dropped another one-run ball game as the Gators lost 4-3 to the Division I University of Nevada Wolf Pack in a non-conference game at Peccole Park on the campus of the University of Nevada. The Gators are now 5-10 in one-run games.
The Wolf Pack took a 2-0 early lead when they scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning. Broook Stassi hit a two-out single and scored when Brian Barrett reached on a two-base error. Barrett scored on a single by Garrett Yrigoyen.
The Gators came and tied the game with a two-run third inning.
Ben Mielke lead off the third with a single through the left side. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Thomas Wood.
Kevin Dultz then walked and
Tyler Tulowitzki was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With two outs,
Trevor Pasiecznik hit a two-run single to tie the game at 2-2.
SF State (12-24) took a 3-2 in the top of the seventh when
Ian Fregosi opened the inning with pinch hit double. He advanced to second on a sacrifice by
Will Klein. Then with one out,
Ben Mielke was hit by a pitch. Wood drove in the go-ahead run on a ground out to second base to drive in Fregosi.
Stassi tied the game with a lead-off home run to the opposite field in the bottom of the eighth, his second of the season.
Nevada (11-17) won the game in its half of the ninth as Loren Gardner-Young scored the game-winning run when the Gators were called for a balk with the bases loaded. Hugo Hernandez lead off the inning with a wind-aided triple to right field. Gardner-Young then pinch ran for Hernandez. The Gators then intentionally walked the next two batters.
AJ Comaskey pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief for the Gators, giving up two hits while striking out a season high four batters and walking one.
Branden Petrangelo also pitched two scoreless innings of relief, striking out two and walking one.
Jeff Clegg (1-3) recorded the loss for the Gators while Matt Gardner (2-0) picked up the win for the Wolf Pack.
The Gators will return the diamond this weekend when they begin a four-game CCAA series with Sonoma State. The two teams will start the series this Friday, April 15th with a single game at 3pm at Maloney Field on the campus of SF State. The series will move to Rohnert Park for a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 11am. They will end the series in San Francisco with a single game on Sunday at noon.
