SAN FRANCISCO— The fourth team in the nation in NAIA, Cal Baptist Lancers, scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back as they defeated the SF State Gators 11-1 this afternoon in a non-conference game at SF State's Maloney Field. The Lancers (37-11) had 15 hits four coming off the bat of Jake Johnson in the victory as Patrick Smith picked up the win.
Ryan Douglass opened the game with a lead-off single in the top of the first inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Matt Marnati. He then scored on a single by Brian Sharp. Kevin Odom singled to advance Sharp to second. The bases were loaded when John Manzano singled to left center. Sharp scored on a catcher's interference call. Still with one out, Drew Madrigal was hit by a pitch to bring in Odom to increase the visitors' lead to 3-0.
The Lancers added four more runs in the top of the third inning two coming on a one-out double by Douglass to make it 7-0 Lancers. They added four more runs (two in the fourth and two in the eighth) to increase their lead to 11-0.
SF State (13-28) scored in the bottom of the eighth inning on a
Dustin Wold RBI double to left field that
Will Klein scored on to give the Gators their first run of the game. Klein reached on a one-out double and went to third on a pinch-hit single by
Devon King and then scored on Wold's double.
Besides Johnson's four hits, Madrigal, Douglass, and Manzano each had two hits while Madrigal drove in two runs. Johnson also scored three times and Madrigal crossed home twice.
Smith improved to 5-0 for the Lancers as he pitched 5.1 innings and giving up four hits while striking out six and walking one. Travis Barnes and Travis Bender pitched the remaining 3.2 innings, giving up three hits and one run while striking out a combined five batters and walking one.
Wold finished 2-for-2 with a RBI for the Gators while
Kevin Dultz recorded the loss falling to 0-5.
SF State will be off until a week from today, when the Gators face the University of San Francisco Dons in a non-conference game at Benedetti Field on the campus of USF at 2pm on Tuesday, April 26.
