Coyotes Sweep Doubleheader from Gators

Ben Mielke Was 2-For-5 with a RBI and Double in the Gators' DH with CSUSB This Afternoon
SAN FRANCISCO – After taking game one in yesterday's weekend series opener, it was the SF State Gators losing both ends of this afternoon's doubleheader to the visiting Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes, 6-5 and 8-1. With the wins, the Coyotes improve to 13-12 overall and 10-7 in the CCAA.

The Coyotes took a 3-0 lead in the opener of this afternoon's doubleheader in the top of the first inning. The visitors' first three batters reached bases on back to back singles and David Silvas hit a double to right center to score the first two runs of the game. Matt Win hit a one-out single through the left side to score Silvas with the third run of the inning.

SF State came back with a run in the bottom of the first after Kevin Dultz hit a lead-off single and he later scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Thomas Wood.

Cal State San Bernardino added two more runs in the second to increase its lead to 5-1.

The Gators battled back though as they scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Devon King led off as he was hit by a pitch and advanced to second when Will Klein walked. Michael Cala advanced them over a base on a sacrifice. Then with one out, Ben Mielke drove in King with a single to center field. Klein scored the inning's second run on a sacrifice bunt by Dultz to cut the Coyote lead to 5-3.

The visitors added an insurance run in the seventh as Eric Dow scored on a one-out single to right field by Ethan Chapman. Dow led off the inning with a single through the left side and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Mike Newell.

SF State made it 6-4 Coyotes in its half of the seventh as King walked to lead off the inning. He advanced to second when Mielke was walked with two outs and then went to third when Dultz was walked. With the bases loaded, pinch hitter Drew Andersen walked to bring in King. Trevor Longfellow then induced the final out of the inning on a ground out to short.

Gator starter Branden Petrangelo (2-5) held the Coyotes scoreless in the top of the eighth. Trevor Pasiecznik walked to lead off the bottom of the eighth for SF State. Jason Ochart came in to pinch run for him. Ochart advanced to second on a single by Michael Sanchez. Matthew Cummins came in to pinch run for Sanchez. Ivan Otsuka advanced both Ochart and Cummins up a base on a sacrifice. Ian Fregosi then grounded out to second base with one out to drive in Ochart to make the score, 6-5 Coyotes.

Josh Pond then came on in relief and struck out the final Gator of the inning to leave the tying run stranded at third.

Jeff Clegg came on in relief of Petrangelo and left two runners stranded in the top of the ninth.

Mielke led off the Gator half of the ninth with a double down the left field line. Then with two outs, he was picked off at second base to end the game and preserve the 6-5 Cal State San Bernardino win.

Corey Caruso improved to 3-2 for the Coyotes, pitching 6.2 innings, giving up three hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out five and walking three. Pond recorded his 8th save, pitching 1.1 innings of scoreless relief, striking out three and giving up just one hit.

Three Coyotes had two hits apiece in Chapman, Winn, and Dow to lead their hitting attack.

Mielke finished game one for SF State, 2-for-3 with a RBI and a double. Petrangelo fell to 2-5 for the Gators, giving up 10 hits and six runs (four earned) in 8.1 innings of work while striking out two and walking one.

In the nightcap, the Coyotes once again took the lead with a two-run second inning. Chris LeFay walked with one out and advanced to second on a two-out infield single by Darren Dworak. LeFay scored the game's first run on a two-out RBI by Brandon Day. Dworak later scored on wild pitch.

The Gators (10-18, 5-16 CCAA) cut the Coyote lead in half in their half of the third inning on Wood's RBI ground out that scored Otsuka, who reached on a fielder's choice. He advanced to third on a throwing error by the Coyotes and scored on Wood's ground out.

Cal State San Bernardino broke the game open in the fourth with a four-run inning capped by a two-run triple by Chapman to give the Coyotes a 6-1 lead. They added two more runs in the sixth to increase their lead to 8-1.

The Gators had a threat in the seventh inning when Chris Schindler reached base on a hits batsman. He advanced to second when Wold singled to right field. Mielke then walked with two outs, but the Coyotes induced the final out of the game on a ground out.

Lucas Sanford (3-1) picked up the win, pitching six innings, giving up four hits and one unearned run while striking out two. Kerry Kelley pitched a scoreless seventh to preserve the win for the Coyotes. Day finished the nightcap, 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a runs scored.

Dultz (0-2) recorded the loss for the Gators. Five different Gators had one hit.

The two teams will finish off this weekend's four-game series tomorrow morning at 11am for a single nine-inning game at Maloney Field.
