SAN FRANCISCO— Cal State Dominguez Hills' Kyle Pond hit a three-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to key the Toros' 6-4 game one series win over the SF State Gators at Maloney Field this afternoon. The Gators were up 4-3 before Pond's second home run of the season that gave them the lead going into the last inning and a half. Michael Cruz (1-2) pitched 2.1 scoreless innings of relief to preserve the victory for the visitors.
SF State did manage a season high 12 hits, three coming off the bat of junior
Trevor Pasiecznik.
Andrew Suvunnachuen,
Kevin Dultz, and
Dustin Wold each had two hits apiece for the Gators (13-30, 8-25 CCAA).
Barrett Ceverha's solo home run to left center gave the Toros an early 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning.
SF State came back and took the lead on a one-out two-run home run by Pasiecznik, his third of the season, in the bottom of the third.
The Toros (20-22, 15-18 CCAA) retook the lead with a two-run sixth inning. Abel Medina and Jonathan Keener opened the sixth with back-to-back singles through the left side. Drew Rodela advanced the two Toro runners a base on a sacrifice. With two outs and a full count, Matt Faigh hit a two-run single to right field to drive in Medina and Keener and give the visitors a 3-2 lead.
The Gators came right back in their half of the sixth and retook the lead on a two-run double by Wold. Pasiecznik led off the inning with a single to left field and advanced to second on a single by
Tyler Tulowitzki. Then with two outs, Wold hit a two-out two-run double to left field to drive in both Pasiecznik and Tulowitzki and to give the Gators the 4-3 lead.
The game remained 4-3 Gators until the Toro eighth inning. With one out, Kevin Logan reached on a fielding error by the Gators and then stole second and went to third on a throwing error. Carlos Leyva walked to put runners on the corners for Pond. Pond then hit a 1-0 pitch to left field to give the Toros a 6-4 lead, a lead they would not relinquish.
Cruz pitched 2.1 scoreless innings of relief, giving up no hits and striking out one. The Toros had 10 hits with three players each getting two hits apiece in Leyva, Keener, and Kevin Pillar.
Steven Dea (3-7) recorded the loss for the Gators in relief of
Branden Petrangelo who pitched 7 innings, giving up 8 hits and three runs while striking out four and walking four.
The two teams will continue their four-game series with a doubleheader scheduled for tomorrow morning at 11. They will conclude the series on Sunday with a single game also at 11am.
