Banaugh Pitches Complete Game Shutout As Gators Salvage Split with Broncos

Nic Banaugh Improved To 3-2 With His 1st Complete Game Shutout Victory of the Season in the Gators' 1-0 Nightcap Victory Over the Broncos This Afternoon
SAN FRANCISCO – SF State Gator senior pitcher Nic Banaugh (3-2) pitched a complete game shutout in the Gators' 1-0 game two victory over the visiting Cal Poly Pomona Broncos (22-12, 15-12 CCAA) in this afternoon's conference doubleheader at Maloney Field on the campus of SF State. Banaugh struck out six and walked six while giving up just three hits in the night cap. In game one of this afternoon's doubleheader, it was Cal Poly Pomona defeating the Gators 5-1 behind the pitching of Kevin Bosson (7-2).

Trevor Pasiecznik gave the Gators a 1-0 lead with a lead-off home run to left field in the bottom of the fifth inning in game one. The Broncos battled back and took the lead for good as they scored two runs on just one hit in the top of the sixth to take a 2-1 lead.

Travis Taijeron opened the hitting getting hit by a pitch. He advanced to second when Jordan Whitman walked. Both runners advanced a base on a sacrifice bunt by Jenzen Torres. Then with one out, Chris Miller hit a two-run single through the left side to score both runners.

The sore remained 2-1 Broncos until their half of the eighth inning. Torres singled with one-out and advanced to third on a double by Miller. Tyson Edwards then drove in both Torres and Miller with a single to left field. He later scored when Allen Rodarte reached on an error by the Gators to give the visitors a 5-1 lead.

The Gators made some noise in their half of the ninth, when Tyler Tulowitzki hit a one-out single to left center. He advanced to second on a single by Andrew Suvunnachuen. Bosson then retired the next two Gators on a fly out right field and fouled out to the first baseman to preserve the 5-1 victory. He struck out four Gator batters while walking two and gave up five hits and just one run in 9 innings of work.

Whitman and Miller each had two hits for the Broncos while Whitman also had two stolen bases.

Doug Stinson (0-1) recorded the loss for the Gators, pitching 5.1 innings, giving up three hits and two runs while striking out 7 and walking 5. Suvunnachuen finished game one 2-for-4 for the Gators.

The Gators took a 1-0 lead in the night cap on a one-out single to left field by Kevin Dultz that drove in Pasiecznik with what proved to be the game-winning hit.

Pasiecznik reached base on a one-out single up the middle and advanced to second on a single by Nic Gauldin. Then with one out, Dultz hit a 2-2 pitch to left field to drive in Pasiecznik.

Banaugh did not allow a Bronco runner past second base until the top of the sixth inning when Taijeron reached on a one-out two-base error and went to third on wild pitch. Banaugh induced the next Gator batter to strike out swinging. He intentionally walked Torres to put runners on the corner with two-outs. The senior Gator pitcher induced the next batter to fly out to Pasiecznik in left.

Then in the Bronco seventh, Edwards pinch hit for Mike Neff and led off the inning with a walk. He advanced to second on a sacrifice by Stephen Gonzalez and went to third on a ground out by pinch hitter Humberto Tovalin. Banaugh induced the next Bronco to ground out to Tulowitzki at first as the Gators held on for the 1-0 victory.
