SAN FRANCISCO— Cal State Stanislaus' lead-off hitter David Contreras hit a two-out 2-2 pitch over the left field fence in the top of the 14th inning to give the visiting Warriors a 3-2 lead, a lead that Chris Anklam (1-0) would preserve in the bottom of the frame as the visitors took game one of this weekend's four-game series.
Contreras finished the day 2-for-7 with two RBIs and a run scored to lead the way for the Warriors (25-19, 17-18 CCAA). Anklam picked up his first win of the season, pitching two scoreless innings of relief while striking out one and giving up no hits.
The loss spoiled a great performance by SF State starter
Branden Petrangelo. The junior right-handed pitcher pitched 10 innings, giving up 8 hits and two runs while striking out 8 and walking two in recording the no-decision. Jeff Clegg (2-4) pitched four innings of relief, giving up three hits and one run while striking out three and walking no one.
John Canepa's double in the fifth inning put the visitors on the board first as it drove in Kory Vitato, who reached base on a lead-off single up the middle. Then Vitato stole second and advanced to third on a single to left field by Boomer Donnell. He then scored on Canepa's double to left field. Contreras' ground out to short scored Donnell to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead.
The Gators cut the visitor's lead in half in the bottom of the fifth.
Kevin Dultz led off the inning with a lead-off single. He advanced to second on a two-out single by
Will Klein.
Ivan Otsuka walked to load the bases for
Dustin Wold, who then drove in Dultz with an infield single to cut the Warrior to lead to 2-1.
SF State had a chance to tie the game in the 6th inning. Dultz reached on a two-out single and then went to second when
Drew Andersen walked.
Tyler Tulowitzki reached on an error to load the bases, but Warrior starter Vinny Pacchetti induced the next Gator batter to ground out to third.
The Gators had another chance to tie the game in the 8th, when
Andrew Suvunnachuen reached base on a lead-off single. He advanced to second on sacrifice by
Thomas Wood. Pacchetti got the next Gator to ground out to short and then Andersen ripped a liner back at Pacchetti which he snagged to end the hosts' rally.
In the bottom of the ninth, Klein walked with one out and went to second on a two-out walk to Wold.
Ben Mielke reached on a throwing error by the Warriors, which Klein scored on to tie the game at two. With runners on first and second and two outs, Pacchetti preserved the tie as he induced the next Gator to fly out to center field to send the game into extra-innings.
The Gators had a chance to win the game in their half of the 10th inning. Andersen hit a two-out infield single and went to second on a walk to Tulowitzki, but the Warrior reliever (Kory Wallace) struck out the next batter as the game remained tied at 2-2.
SF State (14-33, 9-28 CCAA) had another chance in the 11th as Wold hit a one-out double down the right field line but was left their stranded as Wallace struck out a batter and the induced a fly out to end the inning.
The Warriors had a chance to take the lead in the 13th when Colton Beatty hit a lead-off single up the middle and went to second on an infield single by Zach Cadet.
