Gators Sweep CSU Stanislaus on the Road

Tyler Tulowitzki's sacrifice fly plated the eventual game-winning run in game two as SF State swept CSU Stanislaus on Saturday.
TURLOCK, Calif. Tyler Tulowitzki's sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning scored Chris Schindler with the go-ahead run as San Francisco State rallied to defeat Cal State Stanislaus, 6-5, in the second game of a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader Saturday at Warrior Field. The win enabled  the Gators to complete the sweep after posting a 5-2 triumph in the opener behind pitcher AJ Comaskey's second straight complete game.

In the nightcap, SF State (16-33, 11-28 CCAA) trailed 5-4 in the top of the seventh when Andrew Suvunnachuen led off with a single and stole second moments later following a pitching change. After a flyout, Schindler smacked his first collegiate triple to right-center field as Suvunnachuen raced home. Matt Quintero then drew a walk, while Tulowitzki stepped to the plate as a pinch-hitter and lifted a fly ball on the first pitch to left field to plate Schindler.

The Warriors (25-21, 17-20 CCAA) put a runner aboard in the bottom of the frame when Boomer Donnell was hit by a pitch. However, Gator reliever Jason Ochart entered at this juncture and promptly received a strikeout, a fielder's choice grounder and a groundout to nail down his first collegiate save.

Not to be outdone, SF State's second reliever of the day Mark Rajeski (1-0) earned his first-ever victory for the Purple and Gold, allowing one run on four hits and a walk in 3 1/3 innings after taking over for Doug Stinson with two outs in the third. Conversely, CSUS' Phil Quade (4-1) absorbed the loss after giving up the go-ahead run. Starter Ryan Vander Tuig went six innings, surrendering four runs on five hits and three walks before yielding to Casey Filkins to start the seventh.
AJ Comaskey

The Gators forged a short-lived 2-0 lead in the top of the first on RBI singles by Michael Sanchez and Schindler before the Warriors responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame. With the bases loaded, David Contreras touched home on a fielder's choice by Zach Cadet, who subsequently stole second. An errant throw to second on the play brought in Ross Gonsalves, while Cadet scored on Garrett Wright's sacrifice fly shortly thereafter.

CSUS eventually stretched the margin to 5-2 on run-scoring singles by D.J. Arellano and Gonsalves in the third and fifth innings, respectively, before SF State mounted its comeback.

Schindler finished with two of the Gators' seven hits, while Contreras and Cadet had two apiece for the host school in the loss.

In the game one, SF State received another pitching gem from AJ Comaskey (2-1), who struck out 10 batters en route to his second complete-game victory in a row. Comaskey, the reigning CCAA Pitcher of the Week, gave up two runs on eight hits and two walks, but kept the Warriors off the scoreboard over the final seven innings.

With the game knotted at 2-2, SF State took the lead for good in the top of third as Trevor Pasiecznik delivered a sacrifice fly to plate Dustin Wold, while Kevin Dultz's single up the middle brought in Ben Mielke.

The Gators then closed out the scoring in the fourth when Michael Cala touched home on Drew Andersen's RBI groundout, giving the visitors a 5-2 advantage.

SF State banged out 10 hits in the game, including two each by Mielke and Dultz, while Cala and Ian Fregosi notched run-scoring singles in the second.

Warrior starter Leonard Giammanco (5-5) gave up all five runs on seven hits and three walks in three innings before yielding to Chris Short, while Cadet and Vince Hungerford finished with two hits apiece.

The Gators return to Maloney Field to face CSUS in the series finale on Sunday, starting at noon. Prior to the game, both teams' seniors will be recognized in a ceremony before the first pitch, including SF State's Drew Andersen, Nic Banaugh, Michael Cala, AJ Comaskey, Kevin Dultz, Nic Gauldin, Ben Mielke, Tyler Overstreet and Doug Stinson.
