Gators Fall to Warriors in Season Finale

Ben Mielke singled in his final at-bat as a Gator on Sunday vs. Cal State Stanislaus.
SAN FRANCISCO – Starting pitcher Andrew Stueve tossed a complete game shutout as Cal State Stanislaus registered a 5-0 victory over host San Francisco State in the regular-season finale for both teams Sunday at Maloney Field. With the defeat, the Gators finished the 2011 campaign with a 16-34 overall record and an 11-29 mark in California Collegiate Athletic Association play, while the Warriors ended the year at 26-21 and 18-20 in conference action.

The game was scoreless through two full innings until CSUS pushed across four runs in the top of the third to take a commanding lead it would not surrender. After the first three batters got aboard, David Contreras stepped to the plate and hit a sharp grounder that took a bad hop near third base to score Boomer Donnell, while Colton Beatty's groundout plated Garrett Wright moments later. Zach Cadet then walked to re-load the bases and Bryce Smith drew another base on balls, which brought in John Canepa, while Contreras touched home when Vince Hungerford was hit by a pitch.

The Warriors closed the scoring in the sixth when Wright crossed the plate on Cisco Green's RBI single up the middle.

Stueve (6-2) struck out seven batters and limited the Gators to just four hits and one walk to pick up the victory, while SF starter Nic Banaugh (3-5) absorbed the loss in his final appearance for the Purple and Gold, allowing all five runs on six hits and six walks in 7 1/3 innings.

Ben Mielke, Trevor Pasiecznik, Drew Andersen and Michael Cala each singled for SF State, while Contreras finished with two hits to pace CSUS.

The loss also put a damper on the Gators' Senior Day festivities as both teams' seniors were recognized in a special pre-game ceremony, including SF State's own Drew Andersen, Nic Banaugh, Michael Cala, AJ Comaskey, Kevin Dultz, Nic Gauldin, Ben Mielke, Tyler Overstreet and Doug Stinson.
