Box Score SAN FRANCISCO --- Cal Poly Pomona's Daniel Gomez scored from inside the box off a ball from Sean Gurley in the 15th minute to give the Broncos the 1-0 conference victory over the hosts, SF State Gators (1-1-2, 0-1-1 CCAA). The Gators outshot the Broncos 18-9, but the visitors recorded more shot on goals 8-6.
"This was a very good game from a soccer fans view," said SF State Head Coach Joe Hunter. "It was an evenly played match, but we blinked first," added Hunter. "This is nothing for us to hang our heads on," noted the Gator head coach. "Our guys played well and need to keep the momentum into this coming weekend."
The Gators had the first shot attempt go wide left in the 5th minute by L. Fidel Medina. Then four minutes,
Steven Lujan looked to put SF State on top but his shot went wide right.
Cal Poly Pomona took the lead less than a minute later on a goal by Daniel Gomez off a ball from Sean Gurley.
SF State marched down the pitch one minute later but
Jose Monje's shot was stopped by Kris Minton. The Gators continued on the attack but Minton stopped three SF State shots in the next seven minutes.
Luis Gonzalez looked to double the Bronco lead in the 43rd minute, but
Eric Scolman recorded one of his six saves.
SF State outshot its guests 12-5 in the second half including an attempt by
Edgar Villagrana that was stopped in the 83rd minute by Minton.
Cal Poly Pomona (3-1, 2-0 CCAA) was called for a foul inside the box with four minutes to go in the game, but Minton stopped the Gators' penalty kick attempt and the rebound attempt by
Sasha Chalak to preserve the Bronco 1-0 road conference win.
Scolman had six saves on the day while Minton had 8 saves for the Broncos, who recorded 6 corner kicks to SF State's four.
The Gators will continue their five-game home stand this Friday, Sept. 16th at 12:30pm, when they host UC San Diego Tritons at Cox Stadium.
