Gators Fall On Late Penalty Kick

Antonio Ugarte Recorded Four of the Gators' 18 Shot Attempts In Their 1-0 Loss to UCSD
Box Score  SAN FRANCISCO---    Alex Portela's penalty kick with a little over a minute left gave the visiting UC San Diego Tritons a 1-0 road California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) victory over the SF State Gators.  UC San Diego improves to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the CCAA while the Gators fall to 1-2-2 overall and 0-2-1 in the CCAA. 
 
“When you don't work hard and are not ready to compete, you will not be successful at this level,” said SF State Head Coach Joe Hunter. 
 
The Gators outshot the Tritons 18-12 while each team recorded four shots on goal attempts. 
 
Eric Scolman recorded one of his four saves on the day in the 19th minute as he stopped Kian Malak's attempt to give the visitors an early 1-0 lead.  The Gators went on the offensive in the next four minutes as both Edgar Villagrana and Antonio Ugarte had their shot on goal attempts stopped by the Triton's Josh Cohen. 
 
There were three more combined shot on goal attempts in the final 15 minutes that were stopped by Scolman and Cohen to send the game into the half scoreless. 
 
UC San Diego came out strong in the second half Andisheh Bagheri had his first attempt blocked and the rebound go wide right in the 51st minute. 
 
The hosts had a chance to break the scoreless ti in the 69th minute, but Villagrana's shot was blocked by UC San Diego's defense.  The Tritons looked to have taken the lead, but Evan Walker's attempt hit the crossbar with 12 minutes left in the game. 
 
Villagrana had another attempt to give the Gators the lead stopped by Cohen in the 81st minute.  Then with four minutes left Antonio Ugarte's attempt went wide left to set up the heroics for the Triton's Portela.
 
With 1:11 left on the clock, the Gators were called for a hand ball in the box to give Portela the chance for the penalty kick which he connected on to give the Tritons the 1-0 victory.
 
SF State recorded more corner kicks than the Tritons, 4-2 while Scolman and Cohen each had four saves in goal for their respective teams.
 
The Gators will return to the pitch this Sunday morning at 11:30am, when they take on the Coyotes of Cal State San Bernardino.  The Coyotes will face Cal Poly Pomona this evening in Pomona before heading to San Francisco on Sunday.
