SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco State women's volleyball team used some hot hitting Saturday to register a three-set triumph over Cal State East Bay (25-21, 25-22, 25-7) in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match at the Main Gymnasium.
The Gators recorded an impressive .410 attack percentage for the contest, including a blistering .643 clip in the third set to help raise their record to 7-5 on the season and 3-4 in conference play. The Pioneers (7-3, 3-3 CCAA), meanwhile, were frustrated all night by the SF State defense, finishing with a .076 attack percentage, while knocking down just four kills in the final frame.
Robyn Hall launched a match-high 14 kills, while
Jazmine Williams (.625) collected a season-best 12 non-returnables of her own to lead the Purple and Gold. In addition,
Megan Johnson (.583) and
Halimah Oswald contributed nine kills and four block assists each, while
Iris Tolenada and
Sarah Kurfess totaled match-highs of 40 assists and 14 digs, respectively.
On the flip side, East Bay was paced by Nicole Boyle and Morgan Hirzel, who collected six kills apiece, while Leslie Ray added 13 digs in the defeat.
Trailing 6-4 in the opening frame following a combined block by Katie Allen and Kitona Offord, SF State unleashed a 16-7 blitz, featuring four Hall put-aways and another three by Oswald, to open up a 20-13 lead. The Pioneers would not go quietly, however, as a kill by Boyle narrowed the gap to 23-21. The Gators calmly withstood the challenge, receiving back-to-back kills by Johnson and
Kelly Ostello to close out the set.
The two sides battled through six ties in the second stanza until SF State went ahead to stay at 16-15 following a kill by Hall. The Gator senior continued her clutch play with three additional put-aways down the stretch as the host school maintained the upper hand to grab a commanding 2-0 advantage in sets heading into the locker room.
SF State was all business in the final frame, jumping out to a 9-1 lead and never looking back. The Gators knocked down 18 kills on 28 attempts with no errors as Johnson and Ostello combined for seven tallies during the set. Leading 23-7, reserves
Charlotte Campion and
Kelsie Brennan soon got into the act for the Purple and Gold, launching back-to-back kills to seal the win.
In all, SF State maintained a 52-25 advantage in kills on the evening to go along with a 57-36 edge in digs and 6-3 margin in total blocks.
The Gators will open a three-match road trip in Southern California next weekend, starting with a CCAA tilt at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday, Sept. 30. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
