Box Score SAN FRANCISCO---- With a little over 5 minutes left in the second overtime,
Jose Monje recorded his first goal of the season to give the Gators a 2-1 win over the No. 21 Sonoma State Seawolves (5-3, 4-2 CCAA). This was SF State's third straight win as they improved to 4-2-2 overall and 3-2-1 in the CCAA.
"This was a big win for us as is any win over Sonoma State," said SF State Head Coach
Joe Hunter. "This was a battle of two good teams that played really well this afternoon." "We had an answer for everything that Sonoma State did today." "This was a total team effort, but our backline played extremely well."
Sonoma State's Sean Callahan had the game's first shot on goal attempt in the 18
th minute, but the Gators'
Eric Scolman recorded one of his seven saves. Two minutes later, Kelly Davila went to put the Seawolves on top but Scolman stopped Davila's attempt.
The Seawolves (5-3, 4-2 CCAA) had one more attempt stopped by Scolman, this time in the 23
rd minute Taylor Varnadore's shot was stopped by the Gator keeper to send the game into the half scoreless.
The visitors came out strong in the second half as Jomed Tejan gave the Seawolves a brief 1-0 lead when he connected on his first goal off a cross from Aaron Glover and Nico Spann.
SF State tied the game at 1-1 as
Edgar Villagrana scored his first goal of the season off a cross from
Robert Gilbert in the 57
th minute.
The Seawolves went to take the lead in the 58
th, but Scolman stopped Aaron Glover's attempt.
Sasha Chalak had is attempt to give the Gators a 2-1 stopped by the Seawolves' Andrew Ball in the 64
th minute. Ball also stopped
Antonio Ugarte's attempt in the 65
th minute.
Sonoma State went on the attack after Ball stopped Ugarte's attempt for one of his five saves on the day, but Scolman made another save as he stopped Trevor Hurst attempt in the 66
th minute.
The game remained tied at 1-1 as it went into overtime.
In the first overtime, the Seawolves' Taylor Varnadore has his header shoot high in the first minute of the extra period. Three minutes later, the Gators' Gilbert had his attempt stopped by the Seawolf keeper to send the game into the second extra period.
In the second 10-minute period, the Gators'
Sasha Chalak had his attempt to be hero blocked by the Seawolf defense. Sonoma State then went right down the field, but Hurst had his attempt stopped by the Gators' Scolman in the 103
rd minute.
Then in the 104
th minute,
Jose Monje scored the golden goal for the Gators on a breakaway for his first goal in the purple and gold.
SF State outshot the Seawolves 21-13 including 15-9 in the final three periods. The Gators also recorded more corner kicks then Sonoma State 8-2.
The Gators will return to the pitch this Friday, Sept. 30 at 12:30pm, when they host Cal State Dominguez Hills at Cox Stadium.
