Box Score HAYWARD, Calif.--- The SF State Gators and Missouri-St. Louis Tritons played 110 minutes of scoreless soccer this afternoon in the championship game of the Cal State East Bay Fall Classic. The Tritons (1-0-1) prevailed in penalty kicks, 4-2. The Gators outplayed Missouri-St. Louis as they outshot their visitors 17-4 including 9-1 in the first half.
"We are unfortunate that we just did not put the ball in the net." said SF State Head Coach Joe Hunter. "We had a lot of good chances, but just did not connect on them," added Hunter.
Edgar Villagrana had his attempt to put the Gators on the board in the second minute of the game sail wide on him. Then seven minutes later,
Jose Monje's shot also went wide for SF State. The Gators' onslaught continued as Villagrana had three shot on goal attempts stopped by the Triton's Tim Boruff in the next 20 minutes. Missouri-St. Louis' only shot attempt in the first half went wide in the fourth minute.
The second half was evenly played by both teams with only one soht on goal attempt by the Tritons.
With two minutes left in regulation,
Malcolm Linton's attempt for the game-winner for SF State (1-0-1) went wide.
The first overtime saw just two shot attempts both by the Gators. The first one by
Luis Mendoza was blocked in the 95th minute and the second one by
Antonio Ugarte was stopped by Tim Boruff in the 98th minute. The same thing happened in the second overtime as Ugarte's shot hit the post and Monge's sailed wide to send the game into the shootout round.
Missouri-St. Louis won the shootout round 4-2 to capture the classic championship.
