ROHNERT PARK, Calif.--- Sonoma State junior Will Olsem went 9 of 14 including connecting on a career high 7 three-pointers in the Seawolves' 81-69 win over the visiting SF State Gators this evening at the Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park. Olsem finished with a game high 25 points while Justin Herold added a season high 19 points for the Seawolves (6-7, 4-5 CCAA).
Griffin Reilly led the Gators with 19 points and 7 rebounds.
“We just played 20 minutes this evening and only defended for a half,” said SF State Head Coach
Paul Trevor. 'We did not play as a team and in this league you need to especially on the road.”
The Seawolves shot 52% from the field including going 9-for-18 from three-point land. Besides Olsem and Herold's combined 44 points, Sterling Arterberry added 15 points. They also had the advantage on the boards, 37-29 led by Brian Crow's game high 8.
SF State jumped out to a 13-7 lead in the first six minutes of the, but the Seawolves went on a 8-2 run to tie the game at 15-15 on a jumper by Patrick Scott.
The Gators retook the lead on a jumper by
Griffin Reilly to make it 17-15 visitors with 11:03 left in the half.
Will Olsem's three with 5:47 left in the first stanza gave the Seawolves the 23-22 lead and then a Sterling Arterberry jumper increased the hosts lead to 25-22.
Casey James' three capped a 7-2 run by the Gators as they took a 29-27 lead with a little under three minutes left in the first half.
Patrick Scott's lay-up gave the Seawolves a 30-29 going into the locker room as they scored the final three points of the half.
SF State (4-10, 2-6 CCAA) started the second half with a 9-3 run capped by a Reilly three that gave the visitors a 38-33 lead in the first two minutes of the second stanza.
Sonoma State outscored the Gators 24-6 in the next seven minutes as the hosts took a 57-44 lead capped by a three by Steven Pratt. The Seawolves increased their lead to 66-52 on a lay-up by Justin Herold with just 7:42 to go in the game.
The Gators would not go away as
Chad Delaney's lay-up with 4:06 left on the clock cut the Seawolves' lead to just 66-61.
Sonoma State outscored SF State 12-5 in the net 3:30 to increase its lead back to double figures (78-66) as the Seawolves held on for a 81-69 victory.
Besides Reilly's 19 points,
Nefi Perdomo had 18 points and 6 assists while
Max Fodor chipped in a career high 12 points off the bench for SF State.
The Gators will continue their season long five-game road trip this Saturday, January 14 for a 7:30pm scheduled tip-off with Humboldt State in Arcata, Calif. Humboldt State defeated No. 10 Cal Poly Pomona 74-64 this evening in Arcata.
