Lumberjacks Hold Off Gators, 66-61

ARCATA, Calif.---  Despite Nicole Hicks' fifth 20-point night and Farrah Shokoor recording her first collegiate double-double, the visiting SF State Gators lost 66-61 to the Humboldt State Lumberjacks (11-3, 7-3 CCAA) at Lumberjack Arena in Arcata, Calif.  Kayla Williams paced the Lumberjacks with 14 points.
 
“Our girls played extremely hard as we had opportunities to close out the game,” said SF State Head Coach Joaquin Wallace.  “However, we came away with many positives and I am hopeful we can continue to improve everyday as we are definitely getting better.”
 
SF State (3-12, 2-7 CCAA) out-rebounded its visitors 48-40 with Shokoor leading the way with a season high 14 rebounds in the loss.  Humboldt State held the Gators to just 34% shooting from the field while forcing 17 turnovers.
 
The first five minutes of the game saw six lead changes and two ties as Michaela Booker's lay-up tied the game at 13-13. 
 
Lisa Petty's lay-up capped a 7-0 run by the Lumberjacks as they took a 20-13 lead in the next four minutes.  SF State cut that lead to 22-21 on two made free throws by Nicole Hicks with a little over eight minutes left in the first half. 
 
Once again, Humboldt State went another run and increased its lead back to seven (28-21) on a lay-up by Whitney Howard.  Hicks' lay-up cut the hosts lead to 28-25 as the Gators ended the half on a 4-0 run.
 
The Gators came out strong out of the locker room in the second half as they scored the first four points of the new stanza taking a 29-28 lead on another Hicks' lay-up.
 
Humboldt State took the lead back on its next possession on a Kayla Williams' lay-up and never relinquished the lead. 

The Lumberjacks increased their lead to 48-38 when Howard went 1-for-2 from the line with 8:57 to go in the game.  They took their largest lead with 2:28 left on the clock when Williams drained a three off an assist from Bree Halsey to give the hosts a 62-51.
 
SF State would not go away as the Gators outscored the Lumberjacks 10-2 in the next two minutes to cut the deficit to 64-61 with just three seconds left. 
 
The Gators fouled the Lumberjacks' Lisa Petty and she connected on both ends of the free throw to secure the 66-61 victory for the hosts.
 
Besides Williams' 14 points, Bree Halsey chipped in 13 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and Caitie Richards finished with 11 points for the Lumberjacks
 
Hicks finished with 24 points for the Gators, shooting 8-for-23 from the field and 8-for-12 from the line. She also recorded four steals and grabbed 8 rebounds.  Shokoor had 11 points to go with her 14 rebounds and also dished out three assists.

SF State will continue its season long five-game road trip this Tuesday, January 17 in Pomona for a 5:30pm scheduled tip-off with No. 16 Cal Poly Pomona.  The Gators lost 44-36 to Cal Poly Pomona on Nov. 23 at the Swamp.
