Gators Fall Short At No. 20 Cal Poly Pomona

POMONA, Calif.---  The visiting SF State Gators were down 56-53 with a chance to tie the game, but the No. 20 Cal Poly Pomona Broncos finished the game on a 9-1 run to take the 65-54 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) victory at the Broncos' Kellogg Gymnasium in Pomona, Calif., this evening.  Robbie Herndon paced the Gators with 11 points and a season high 8 rebounds.
 
“We played 39 good minutes this evening,” said SF State Head Coach Paul Trevor.  “Our young guys stepped up tonight and we are getting better just need to get over that hump.”
 
Herndon finished the evening going 3-for-6 including a season high three three-pointers.  The freshman guard also was two-for-two from the charity stripe while grabbing a season high 8 rebounds, dishing out two assists and recording two steals.
 
Mitchel Anderson led the Broncos  (10-3, 7-3 CCAA) with 17 points while Dwayne Fells chipped in 14 points and Tyquan Brown added 11 points.  Cal Poly Pomona held the Gators to just 38% shooting from the field while the Broncos went 18-for-29 from the charity stripe.  SF State had just 9 attempts from the charity stripe while connecting on four of them.
 
The hosts scored the first five points of the game, but the Gators came right back and cut the lead to 10-9 on a David Love lay-up at the 12:21 mark. 
 
SF State followed that outscoring its hosts, 12-11, tying the game at 21-21 on a three by Andre Jones off an assist from Casey James with 5:22 left in the half.  The Gators took a 29-26 lead on a three by Herndon with 41 seconds left.  The Broncos' Terrence Drisdom drained a three to cut the Gator lead to 29-28 heading into the locker room.
 
Drisdom gave the Broncos back the lead on their first possession of the second half as he connected on a tip-in to give the hosts a 30-29 lead.  James' hit a three to cap a mini 5-0 run by the visitors as they took a 34-30 lead in the next minute.
 
The hosts then went on a 8-3 run to take a 38-37 lead on a three by Anderson at the 16:08 mark of the second stanza, a lead they would not relinquish. 
 
The nationally ranked Broncos increased their lead to 51-43 with 7:14 left in regulation on a Anderson lay-up. 
 
SF State (4-12, 2-8 CCAA) would not go away as the Gators went on a 10-4 run to cut the lead to 55-53 with less than three minutes to go on two made free throws by Herndon.
 
The Broncos finished the game outscoring the Gators 10-1 to take the 65-54 victory. 
 
The Gators' bench outscored Cal Poly Pomona 21-18 led by David Love with 9 points while Casey James tied his season high with 8 points.
 
SF State will continue their three-game road trip this Friday, January 20 for a 7:30pm scheduled conference game with Cal State L.A. at the Eagles Nest on the campus of Cal State L.A.
