Golden Eagles Run Past SF State

Angela Van Sickel Led the Gators with a Career High 25 Points this Evening at Cal State L.A.
Box Score  LOS ANGELES – Three days after upsetting No. 17 Cal Poly Pomona on the road, the SF State Gators hit a road block in the Cal State L.A. Golden Eagles this evening losing 82-59 at the Eagles Nest at BJKSC in Los Angeles.  The Gators lost despite Angela Van Sickel's career high 25 points.
 
“Cal State L.A. is a quality team and they played well this evening,” said SF State Head Coach Joaquin Wallace.  “I felt our team played hard, however, we got beat by the better team this evening.”
 
Van Sickel was the only Gator to score in double figures as she went 10-for-23 from the field and connected on a career high four three-pointers.  Cal State L.A. held the Gators to just 37% shooting from the field while connecting on 50% of its attempts. 
 
Erika Ruiz paced the Golden Eagles with 12 points off the bench.  Jazzi Johnson added 11 points for the hosts and Samantha Hansen chipped in 10 points for the victors.
 
SF State built an early five-point lead in the first three minutes of the game, but the Golden Eagles' Ruiz's lay-up gave the hosts a 15-10 lead at the 12:08 mark of the first stanza. 
 
Farrah Shokoor's lay-up capped a 9-2 run by the visitors and gave them a 19-17 lead with eight minutes left in the first half. 
 
The Gators then went scoreless over the next five minutes as Cal State L.A. took a 27-19 lead with a little over three minutes left in the half.  The Golden Eagles increased their lead to 32-22 on a three by Tessondra Williams. 
 
Van Sickel then hit a three to cut the lead to 32-25, but Alisha Belt hit a lay-up to give the Golden Eagles a 34-25 lead heading into the locker room.
 
Cal State L.A. outscored the Gators 23-12 in the first six minutes of the second half to take a 57-35 lead and cruised on to the 82-59 conference win.
 
The hosts held the Gators' leading scorer, Nicole Hicks, scoreless and forced 16 turnovers while recording 11 steals. 
 
SF State (4-13, 3-8 CCAA) won the battle on the boards though, 42-39 with Lauren Varney leading the way with 10 rebounds. 
 
The Gators will end their season long five-game road trip tomorrow evening in Carson, Calif., for a 5:30pm scheduled conference game with Cal State Dominguez Hills.  The Toros lost 65-50 to No. 17 Cal Poly Pomona this evening at the Toro Dome.
